Violets win, set individual records

In another resounding win, NYU women’s soccer defeated St. Joseph’s College 4-0 at Gaelic Park in the Bronx.

Freshman forward Melissa Menta scored two goals, the first in the 23rd minute and the other in the 82nd. Junior defender Mary Clair scored her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute and sophomore forward Amelia Hammerl scored in the 55th minute.

“Our goals were all good combination plays, especially the goal that Ashley [-Simone McKenzie] crossed to Amelia, who then headed it in,” said senior captain Sierra
Tumay. “That was a pretty goal.”

“There was no question we were the dominant team both strategically and tactically,” Menta said.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meg Patten was very impressed by her team’s performance.

“It’s great to come out of the game with a [win] before we travel to St. Louis and Chicago for our conference games,” Patten said. “It was also great to find out that Menta and senior [forward] Serra Tumay broke school records this game as well.”

Menta has already accumulated 32 points, which is more than any other NYU player in a single season. Tumay now has the NYU women’s soccer record for assists with 20 for her career.

“It’s awesome we got a shut out so we just have to keep that composure going into our [University Athletic Association] games this weekend.” Menta said.

NYU women’s soccer is currently 1-1 in conference matches this season. The Violets look to improve that record when they play at Washington University in St. Louis Friday, Oct. 12, and at the University of Chicago Sunday, Oct. 14.
