NYU Reacts: Student Minimum Wage Raised to $15

On Thursday, President Andrew Hamilton issued an email to the NYU community stating that the university will be instituting a $15 per hour minimum wage requirement for work-study recipients and student workers as part of his recent affordability efforts.

The Budget Office plans to raise student wages over the next three years while working with Martin Dorph, NYU’s Executive Vice President for Finance and Information Technology, to ensure pay levels for student work are effective and the hiring process is straightforward.

The change comes after repeated demonstrations from the Student Labor Action Movement, an organization that has continually fought for fair student wages.

“What the memo illustrates is the priority NYU’s new president, Andy Hamilton, is placing on grappling with the issues of affordability,” university Spokesman John Beckman said.


In addition, WSN reached out to NYU students who shared their thoughts on the recent change.

“I am unbelievably moved and excited that NYU SLAM has won its campaign on the Fight for $15. We knew this day would come, but I don’t think any of us thought it would come so soon. It was a surprise, and a beautiful one at that! “The fact that NYU is doing this and taking this step as the first private university to take this step in this country, I think provides a good amount of momentum of pushing this towards the whole state.   1. This will not affect anyone in a large way. I am employed in work-study at NYU. The funds for work-study are provided by the federal government. The usual amount is $3000. Now students will work less hours to reach this $3000 mark. But – once this amount is reached, I have seen work-study students be fired. If you use up your work-study wages, the university will simply replace you with another work-study student. Less hours, same max income, fired sooner.

  2. Federal Work Study is capped at $3,000/year or $1500/semester. Say there are 14 weeks in each semester. $1500 divided by 14 weeks = $107 a week, divided by $15/hour = 7 hours a week you can work to stretch out your job for the semester. So the increase in hourly wage will be compensated by fewer work hours OR students having to work fewer weeks in a semester. Basically you are capped at making the SAME amount of money and NYU has no control over it – the Federal government does.

    This is only for Fall and Spring. The Summer financial aid is totally different.
