Being neither a sovereign nation nor a state has prevented the island’s residents from enjoying the full rights of American citizenship: Puerto Rican residents are not allowed to vote in federal elections, they have no representation in the Senate, and the delegate in the House of Representatives serves more as a figurehead.
Isolationist populism is becoming a concern not just in the United States, but also other parts of the world such as Britain and France.

Instead of trying to turn the university into a sovereign entity within the state of New York, these misguided protesters would be better off using their time and resources to combat unjust travel bans in a more informed, constructive context.
