Golf
The men’s golf team placed 15th in the Flower City Preview at the Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor, NY. They finished the three-round tournament on Monday, September 23rd, scoring 27-over in the par-72 course. UAA rival Emory University won the 18-team tournament with a 31 under par.
Sophomore Jomyuth Luangtana-anan was the Violets’ highest finisher in 25th and one over par for three rounds. Next was first-year Oscar Uribe, who finished 53rd with a score of seven over par.
The men’s team will next compete at the Skidmore College Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13, in Saratoga Springs, NY.
The women’s team finished second in the Williams Invitational in Williamstown, MA, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29. The Violets finished 32-over in the 71-par course over two days, seven strokes ahead of Williams College in third place with a score of 39 over par. Wellesley College topped the 23-team competition with a score of 24 over par.
First-year Naomi Tan, who finished third with a score of two over par, was NYU’s highest finisher. She was five strokes behind first-place Emily Renoff of Bowdoin College. Junior Tiya Chowdary finished tied sixth place with a score of six over par.
The Violets return to the course to play in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, PA over two rounds on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8.
Tennis
The women’s team finished off a strong performance on Monday, Sept. 23, on the final day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships.
Senior Jimena Menendez won the championship for the second year in a row, finishing her 6-0 performance with a championship win against her teammate, first-year Victoria Wang. Not only is this the first time a Violet has won the tournament for the second consecutive year, but her victory also clinched All-American honors.
Before the final, Menendez beat graduate teammate Isabella Hartman 7-6, 6-1 in the semifinals, and Wang defeated Konika Dhull of Skidmore College 6-1, 6-4.
In the doubles, Wang and first-year Siona Vallabhaneni advanced to the final and were narrowly beaten by Skidmore’s Dhull and Grace Truong 7-6, 7-5.
Menendez, Wang and Vallabhaneni will represent the Violets at the ITA Nationals. The tournament will be held Oct. 10-13, in Rome, GA.
The men’s tennis team traveled to Drew University in Madison, NJ to compete in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships over the weekend, Sept. 27-29.
In the first round of competition, junior Boren Zheng and first-year Bryan Hui both advanced to the round of 16 after winning their respective matches. Zheng defeated Rahul Ravi of the University of Rochester in straight sets and Griffin Biernat of Skidmore College 6-7, 7-6, 10-8.
Zheng defeated Nicolas Luis Vega 6-3, 6-0. and his teammate Tasmay Shah 6-2, 6-3. However, Zheng was finally defeated in Sunday’s semifinal match against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Aiden Drover-Mattinen 6-2, 0-6, 1-6.
Hui played a tough match against Lleyton Mendieta of Hamilton College 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 before defeating Brett Schuster of The College of New Jersey 6-3, 6-3.
Hui lost in the round of 16 playing RPI’s Tsubasa Okada by 6-3, 4-6, 11-13.
The men’s tennis team will be back in action against RPI in Troy, NY on Feb. 22, 2025.
Soccer
The 19th-ranked women’s soccer team remained undefeated with a 1-0 victory over Sarah Lawrence College on Monday, Sept. 23. The win resulted from an 84-minute goal by senior Rachel Kim.
The Violets held Sarah Lawrence to just one shot throughout the game, out-shooting them 15-1.
On Sept. 26, the Violets beat the John Jay College of Criminal Justice 8-1 in their biggest win of the year. The team scored five goals in the first half, with the first by senior Hope Neale coming within four minutes for her third goal of the season. Junior Hunter Hoelscher scored two goals — also known as a brace — with her first goal, and the Violets’ second, coming off of a volley from junior Elizabeth Argenziano’s cross.
John Jay College managed to grab a consolation goal to cut the deficit in half 25 minutes in, but sophomore Alexa Buxbaum restored the two-goal advantage seven minutes later. Senior Isa Badillo added NYU’s fourth goal three minutes later in the 35th minute.
The last four goals came in a 10-minute goal spree — first-year Marlee Scanlon scored her first collegiate goal for the Violet’s fifth, junior Rena Kalargiros added a fifth to her season tally, Kelli Keady scored the seventh goal, as well as adding two assists, and Hoelscher scored her second of the game, and third of the season, to close out the match.
The women’s team is now 6-3-0 and will travel to Scranton, PA, on Tuesday, Oct. 1, to play the University of Scranton.
The men’s team scored 10 goals against Baruch College, as sophomore goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey recorded his third clean sheet of the year, and first-year goalkeeper Max Saguier celebrated his first minutes in Violets’ colors.
NYU, now 4-2-1, scored five goals on either side of halftime. Senior Bryce Lexow scored a first-half hat trick, with goals in the third, 13th and 21st minute. Lexow leads the Violets’ scoring charts with a season-high of eight, surpassing last year’s top-scorer of seven.
First-year Colton Jensen scored his second goal of the season in the 18th minute. Senior Ahmed Ibrahim scored the Violets’ fifth in the 22nd minute, assisted by Jensen.
Senior Nathan Bennett scored the sixth goal to restart the rampage in the 63rd minute. Fellow senior Marcelo Freire got his first goal of the season for NYU’s seventh in the 71st minute and his second with a minute left to play in the match.
Senior Rafael Panero-Ren scored the eighth goal of the game and his first of the season in the 83rd minute, and sophomore Pedro Bottene, playing up front, scored his first collegiate goal for the Violets in the 84th minute.
The men’s team plays Sarah Lawrence College next on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Yonkers, NY, before kickstarting their UAA conference campaign against Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Volleyball
The No. 13 ranked women’s volleyball team played Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis University in the UAA First Round Robin and ended the weekend 10-6. Starting off against Carnegie Mellon, the Violets played well and took the first set but they ultimately lost in five — 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 9-15.
The Violets played well in their second game versus the Judges, defeating them 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15. After the Judges tied the match 1-1, the third set was tied 18-18 when junior Sarah Lattan’s pivotal kill led to a 7-1 run.
NYU lost momentum on Sunday, losing the third game of the round to the University of Chicago. They won the first and third sets 28-26 and 25-23. Sophomore Chloe Lemons led in kills, with 15 recorded in the five sets. Graduate student Yooni Park had two of NYU’s three service aces, but UChicago pulled seven service aces and defeated NYU 25-17 in the second set, 25-14 in the fourth, and won 15-12 in the fifth set to take the win.
