With only a few ingredients, you can make your own Labneh sandwich. An upgraded version of the usual grilled cheese, this is a meal worth looking forward to after a long day. (Photo by Fatimah El zahraa Zeni)

Growing up in a Middle Eastern household, my mom would always make us Labneh sandwiches. Labneh is a soft, creamy strained cheese similar to Greek yogurt. It was a meal to look forward to after a long day — enjoyed by all of my family. Although it could be eaten in the span of 30 seconds, the mere name of it caught the attention of my siblings and I, and we would stand around the table in silence and munch on this delicacy. To recreate this tasty snack, head to your nearest Middle Eastern grocery store and stock up on the essentials below.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 tablespoon of Labneh
  2. 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  3. Salt to taste
  4. 1 pita bread
  5. Dried mint leaves (for garnish)

Directions:

  1. Slice the pita around the edges so it becomes two pieces
  2. Put a tablespoon of Labneh on one piece and spread it across the surface
  3. Take the olive oil and add salt to it
  4. Carefully pour it in a straight line vertically across the sandwich
  5. Sprinkle some dried mint leaves on top
  6. Roll up the bread and split it in half to share
  7. Enjoy!
