University News Bites

  • STEM news: NYU-Poly has shattered another record in cancer marker detection. Though a bit too esoteric for the average reader, essentially scientists have improved and refined previous technology that allowed them to detect single virus particles. The new discovery builds on a technique pioneered by a partnership between NYU-Poly and Fordham University and could yield new understanding of how proteins attach to antibodies.

  • Innovative teaching: Professor Michael Posner conducted a Q & A session on Bloomberg Businessweek to discuss NYU Stern’s human-rights center. Former Founding Executive Director of Human Rights first, Posner discusses his ideas for meshing business and human rights in his teaching.
  • Too close to hospice: “The hard-charging chairman and namesake of the NYU Langone Medical Center emailed faculty on Monday, urging them to contribute to re-election campaigns for Sen. Chuck Schumer, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Rep. Peter King.

    • Skin you’re in: Miley Cyrus posing nude on a Marc Jacobs shirt promoting NYU Cancer Institute and NYU Langone. Now those are a few pronouns you don’t read together very often.
Playing catch-up 

 

  • Got the grant: NYU recently received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to go towards courses about urban development. The grant, part of the Foundation’s “Architecture and Urbanism in the Humanities” program, will help fund three new NYU faculty who will be tenured in one or more NYU humanities departments.
  • Ranking: NYU ranked first in “50 U.S. Colleges Where Art Programs Abound.” for providing students with the widest range of art and related degree programs.
