Put nontraditional prints in everyday menswear

The chilly fall season has officially arrived, and the stylish men of NYU are breaking out their coats and boots that are fit for lower temperatures. But dreary days don’t necessarily mean darker color palettes. Prints other than the classic, plaid button-down shirt are making their way back into men’s fashion and are a unique way to add texture and dimension to fall wardrobes.

Here are cool and easy ways to incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe:

If you want to add to a subtle accent to your outfit for school, try a subtle checker-patterned scarf with fringe detailing. Available in light brown or gray at H&M ($12.95) , this accessory will add a classy touch to a basic black shirt and skinny jeans. The subtle colors keep the pattern from being too overpowering while still incorporating a splash of pattern.

Also, from Zara Men, a checked foulard ($35.90) is a great way to integrate colorful touches of red and blue. A pair of dark-wash jeans and a simple, brown boot keep this piece street chic and casual cool.

Striped sweaters are another must-have. Not only are they classically sophisticated, they can also add a great pop of color. Whether burgundy-navy, black and white, or jacquard knit, striped sweaters can range from subtle to kooky and eye-catching. Ty Atkin, a sophomore in the Liberal Studies Program, plans on wearing a lot of striped sweaters this season.

“Big, striped sweaters are literally the best things in the world, especially in the fall and winter,” Atkin said. “I’m looking to get many more for the months to come.”

And let us not forget about camouflage. Slowly creeping its way back into the fashion world, this pattern is a great way to add some edge to your look, and it can be functional, too. Gallatin sophomore Luke Dawson usually sticks to a minimialistic style, but he can invision incorporating a camouflage jacket with his monochromatic outfits.

“I’m not much of a print person,” Dawson said. “If I were to do a camo jacket, I would go for an abstracted adaptation of the print and stick to having one piece for my wardrobe of black, green and navy.”

For the adventurous, Urban Outfitter’s camouflage parka ($110) not only adds a bold and trendy twist but will also keep you warm as it gets colder.

For those planning on keeping it simple, don’t object to experimenting with some camo detailing and adding a funky surprise. A subtle leather camouflage belt from Zara Men ($39.90) would look great paired with dark-wash skinny jeans and a hoodie.

Whether incorporating a dash of print or going all out and mixing a checkered scarf with a striped sweater, don’t be afraid to play with patterns this season.
