Monika Chiang Spring/Summer 2013

Monika Chiang’s latest collection, debuted today during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, was one of juxtapositions and unexpected touches, as is Chiang’s signature style. Featured heavily in the collection were loose-fitting blazers and collared shirts in soft, nearly sheer fabrics, moto jackets in black and pale blue, and reptilian touches on shoes, bags, and even skirts. A recurring theme was that of simplicity with unique details, as seen in a cream leather jacket with quilting on the shoulders or the pleated leather skirt with python-embossed vinyl panels underneath.

Chiang explained the contradiction of athleticism and luxury in her collection as being inspired by the vibrant energy of South Africa, where she recently visited. The athletic influence was visible in silk parachute pants, striped baseball jackets with subtle sparkle, and straw baseball hats in pink and glittering neutrals.

Rich kelly green, navy, and coral tones stood out against neutrals black and cream, and the jewelry spanned from thick chain necklaces to sparkling floral pieces. The collection carefully incorporated contrasts between professional and casual, glamorous and sporty, and certainly between masculine and feminine. The models, though wearing mostly loose, menswear-inspired pieces, sported fresh faces with pink lip gloss, peach blush, and shimmery cheekbones, with voluminous but neat, slicked-back hair.

The presentation had the atmosphere of a relaxed cocktail party, with the DJ spinning remixes of Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling” and Elie Goulding’s “Lights”. Spotted among the crowd was model Selita Ebanks.
