NYU Student Starter Pack
April 3, 2017
Despite its reputation as a diverse community, some items repeatedly show up across NYU. Students are always in tune with the latest and most popular trends —whether that be technology, fashion or stationery. Here’s a guide to achieving or validating your already basic NYU Student look.
MacBook Computer
Glimmering silver lids with radiating apples blind you when you walk into any class. Matching their sister iPhones, MacBooks are the majority of laptops used and seen across campus. If you have a Macbook, chances are it’s also decked out with a sea of RedBubble stickers to fully achieve that “I’m a college student who shows my interests with stickers” look.
Fjallraven Kanken Backpacks
Advertised as “the perfect backpack for everyday adventure,” these bags constantly accompany NYU students on their adventures through the city streets or the catacombs of Bobst. They come in a range of sizes — from purses to classic backpacks — and boast colors like putty and ochre.
Passion Planner
Sure, these were given out for free at the beginning of the year. But, students are nonetheless still using these nondescript black books to keep the secrets and details of their ever-busy NYU lives. With all those tiny boxes, how do they manage to write in their classes, especially some of those lengthy Gallatin class titles?
Apple Earphones
Although they won’t cancel out fire engine sirens or honking taxis, this other Apple product is a staple for students who attempt to drown out city sounds with their music. Students use these around campus to pass time during commutes, between classes and to avoid people they don’t want to talk to. Aside from trivial use, students also like to augmentate their music volumes to slowly kill their eardrums with more of a concert listening experience.
Canada Goose Jackets
Many people struggled to stay warm this past winter, but not the students around Washington Square Park — flocks of them wore these infamous jackets. With a pretty $800 price tag and strong opposition from PETA enthusiasts, some wonder why people haven’t found cheaper but equally warm alternatives.
Adidas Superstars
These bulky shoes have made their way into everyone’s closets and hearts because they pair with almost everything under the sun. Despite Superstars coming in an array of colors, the classic black and white shoes are the most common on campus.
Another College’s Gear
Our university is full of school spirit for NYU — and Harvard and Boston College and Stanford. The list goes on. Vintage is all the rage, and people are picking up old college pullovers from local thrift shops to flaunt big names like Berkeley and Columbia Law School. Swag from other colleges is a staple whether you’re a reject of said school or dug it out of your mom’s closet.
