Laura Diaz, Contributing Writer

With summer course registration beginning this week, students are reminded that course options are endless and span the globe. Whether you are looking for something to learn over the summer or hoping to plan ahead, here are a few options for upcoming terms.

As part of a WSN series, students share their favorite NYU classes and why they think all students should take them. Explore your options — you might be surprised. The students featured below certainly were. Their favorite classes came from outside of their school, major and countries.

Advanced College Essay, Steinhardt Required Courses

“To be honest, I like ACE because it not only teaches you to write, but teaches you to engage with stuff actually relevant to what you’re studying or interested in. You get to read texts about MCC and use what you’ve learned to critique and write about them.” Adam Dicce, Steinhardt freshman

Cervantes, Professor Paco Layna, CAS at NYU Madrid

“Professor Paco Layna is an expert in Don Quixote – he’s really passionate about it. When he talks about history and analyzes it, his eyes shine and [he] gets enthusiastic about it. The guy even changes his tone when he’s talking about the story. He speeds up when he talks about an action scene and creates suspense with his voice: he acts for his students.” Maria Rendo, GLS senior

U.S. Foreign Policy, Professor Jeffrey Togman, CAS

“My favorite was U.S. Foreign Policy, primarily because I love foreign policy and international politics, but the professor, Jeffrey Togman, was himself very passionate about the subject and made the material so simple and fun. It was a class that met once a week for nearly three hours and I looked forward to it every week because we would talk about current affairs and history all at once.” Hira Rahman, CAS alum

Words, Professor Nizar Habash, at NYU Abu Dhabi

“My favorite class I have taken so far was a class I took in my sophomore fall semester at NYU Abu Dhabi, called Words. Taught by a computational linguist, we examined languages from the linguistic to computational to political perspective. The class has definitely helped me in my travels to identify and pursue a deeper interest in learning about new cultures and languages.” Siba Saddique, NYU Abu Dhabi junior

When the Nightmare is Real: Trauma in Childhood & Adolescence, Professor Adam Brown, CAS

“Personally, I want to go into the medical field and work with children, so I wanted to learn about mental health among kids because it’s different from adults, and I realized it wasn’t a class just for pre-health or pre-med, there’s a lot of Tisch people in the class. I enjoy it because the professor is really cool, the material is really interesting and relatable, and this is a class of about 100 students, but the professor makes it feel as if [there are] 12 because the he makes it interactive and unique.” Joanna E. Caravantes, CAS freshman
