Meet the Model: Alain Polanco

Started career: 17 years old
Agency: RED
“You’re job is how good you look, so you’re constantly comparing yourself to other people, like when you don’t book a job. It’s trying to find a balance of loving yourself, but also knowing there are still things to work on. ”
How do you balance school with your career?
It was really hard. It still is. If you look at my calendar it’s just like a crap ton of castings in between class and I have to carry my books with me everywhere. I’ll be in class and then [my agency] will send me a casting and I’m like, “well shit.” So I have to see whether the castings are worth it. Like if the show will actually book me.
Give us the details on Givenchy.
I’ve done shows for them for the past three seasons. They fly us out for Paris Fashion Week, put us up in a hotel — it’s a really nice situation. That was my first big show. Nothing really came from it the first two times I walked for them but this time since they changed my hair I’ve been getting a lot more work.
Shows or presentation?
Shows. Oh my god. I don’t like presentations because it makes me feel like a mannequin. As opposed to a runway show where at least I’m a person.
