UPDATE Tuesday, Dec. 3 2:05 p.m.: According to a university-wide email from Vice President of Global Campus Safety Jules Martin, the NYPD has detained a suspect in the rape case involving a woman affiliated with the Catholic Center last month.
Assistant director of Public Safety Jay Zwicker said NYPD is fully responsible for this ongoing case and this is all the information NYU Public Safety has.
“I’m rather confident that if there is any other information that is made privy to us that is relevant and important for the community to know, certainly we’ll share it,” Zwicker said. “I’m not sure when that will be, but at least this is good news.”
NYU spokesman John Beckman said it is a relief that there is a suspect in custody and off the streets.
“We’re grateful to the Police Department for their diligent efforts to capture this assailant,” Beckman said. “This was a highly unusual occurrence on our campus, and we’re pleased to know that justice will be done.”

NYU Public Safety sent a university-wide email this morning, Oct. 31, informing the community of an assault on a woman as she was entering the Catholic Center in the Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life.
The email said the woman is in the hospital in stable condition. Also according to the email, the NYPD is pursuing the capture and arrest of the attacker.
“The assailant is described as a muscular black man wearing a sweater, sweatshirt or hoodie with a bandage of some type (perhaps an ace bandage or a cast) on one arm,” the email said.
The email provides advice to students to ensure their own safety, suggesting that students be aware of their surroundings, travel in groups, walk in populated areas, seek help if they feel threatened and know where there are blue light emergency call boxes.
An NYPD spokesperson said around 2:15 p.m. that no arrests had been made in the ongoing investigation. She said the victim remains in stable condition.
NYU spokesman John Beckman said he encourages anyone who has information that could help the investigation to come forward.
“Our thoughts are with the victim of the crime, first and foremost; we hope for a swift recovery from any injuries she may have suffered,” Beckman said. “The NYPD is vigorously investigating, and the University will assist in any way it can; we hope that the assailant is brought swiftly to justice.”
The university does not have any more information about the investigation as of this time.
This is the second assault on a member of the NYU community in the past month.
NYU spokesman Philip Lentz said the university is aware of that and directs students to the advice provided in the email.
“There are some very helpful hints there about trying to avoid being in situations where you could be more vulnerable to a criminal attack,” Lentz said. “[These are] normal precautions that we would advise everyone to consider when they are traveling, especially in the evening.”
