Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen named their ready-to-wear brand, Elizabeth and James, after their two younger siblings, drawing inspiration from Elizabeth’s uptown chic mixed with James’ downtown cool. For their 2014 Spring/Summer collection, they drew on all kinds of juxtaposition.
Everything about the presentation was a dichotomy; down to the cold pressed juice served alongside trays of champagne. Models posed on a catwalk in the center of a long, white room. Some stood rigidly, clutching snakeskin and leather handbags, while others sat on square leather ottomans, relaxed. Their hair was tied into ponytails, an easy style made complicated with locks of hair wrapped around the base.
The clothes were often in contrast with themselves; fabrics were cut in uncharacteristic ways, and established styles were updated with unexpected details. A utilitarian cargo jacket was made breezy and comfortable in an olive enzyme washed Fuji silk. Black mesh fabric gave an athletic vibe to an evening gown paired with a pale blue lambskin handbag. Birkenstock-like sandals were made stylish in metallic silver and red velvet.
The designers themselves must find their style somewhere between their two siblings; the chic-meets-slouchy vibe of the collection was mirrored in their own outfits and demeanor. Ashley and Mary Kate huddled on a couch in the corner or hid at the back of the room, wearing pointy pumps with ripped jeans and oversized jackets, whispering to each other and checking their cell phones while clubby indie rock played over speakers—yes, clubby indie rock; the presentation was in a state of happy conflict even down to the music.
