If there was a Fashion Week yearbook, this presentation would win the superlative for Most Unique. Instead of confining its Spring/Summer 2014 collection to a singular room, the 11-year-old cult label took to the streets on Monday afternoon for a live skateboard parade in Chelsea. In keeping with the prevailing color palette of the week, Slow and Steady’s gang of models-turned-skaters coasted down the concrete runway in varying combinations of oversized white oxford shirts, grey sweatshirt ponchos, and black leather tee shirts. A pop of color also made an appearance in the form of royal blue Yves Klein baseball caps.
As viewers waited for the parade to begin, the label’s designer, Mary Ping, explained the nature of the new collection: “These pieces are what I like to call re-envisioned basics. They are from our archive, which has been building for over ten years now.” When asked how she went about the selection process for the new collection, she noted that all the pieces in the archive are “building blocks” that can be put together in any number of ways, which is a clear testament to their tenacious versatility.
That being said, it is a bit difficult to fully take in a collection when its individual components are breezing past you at lightning speed. In theory, taking fashion to the streets is an admirable concept – but in reality, it was too disorganized to be entirely effective. Toward the end of West 15th Street, a few of the models actually gave up on their ornate skateboards, opting to tuck them under their arms and saunter down the block as their counterparts sped away. Who knows? Maybe slow and steady really does win the race.
