If you were to pack a suitcase to jet set off to Santorini, you could do no better than to fill it to the brim with Sachin + Babi. The show drew inspiration precisely from the pristine whites and azure blues of the Mediterranean. Its theme? “The relaxed glamour of society girls on holiday yachting along the Greek isles,” as the tagline read.
And here indeed we found the key word to describe Sachin + Babi’s take on Spring 2014: relaxed. There was no restraint or fussiness; the dresses fell comfortably on the models’ bodies and although each piece fit flawlessly, the sense of dread at having to readjust high fashion clothes after even the slightest movement was absent . Even the mood backstage was relaxed, as Sachin and Babi casually consented to interviews about their namesake brand mere minutes before the show was scheduled to start.
So what exactly did the husband-and-wife design duo behind Sachin + Babi send down the runway? Nothing short of a jet set getaway interpreted through clothing: light layered tees, pattern cigarette pants, sheer organza midi skirts, summer tweed jackets, and even a couple of leather crop tops. A monochrome palette soon gave way to those daydreamy Mediterranean blues, as well as canary yellows, rich creams, and even a chameleon green (as seen on a striking side-zip textured leather moto jacket). But perhaps the most dazzling of all, and now an iconic feature of Sachin + Babi, was the detailing. The abstract floral embroidery was impeccable. Highlighted with tastefully placed sequins, it added an unexpected dimension to open-back blouses and full, feminine skirts. Denim and leather lattice trims, blossoming cutouts that played with negative space, and textured stripe piping also made appearances.
Yet for all the beauty and whimsy in the collection, there was always a sense of practicality to the clothes. As Babi commented before the show, there is a clear “intellectual and functional” side to the brand. “My gal is you, is me,” Babi said. She chooses looks that are “easy to wear, to take from day to evening.” Easy to wear, yes but also special. Sachin sees their clothing as having a “lighthouse effect” on the wearer, offering them “that one piece in the wardrobe that transforms the whole look.” Whether situated on the coast of Mykonos or on the Chelsea Piers, this lighthouse will without a doubt keep shining brightly well into the future.
