Fast-paced beats rang through the Gothic walls of the High Line Hotel, as models representing five of Korea’s top contemporary designers strutted down the hotel’s Hoffman Hall, sporting sleek hairstyles and minimal makeup. The five designers put forth strong collections with SJ WANI and D ONTHE LABEL showing the most cohesive lines.
Son Jung Wan’s line, SJ WANI, presented perfect ensembles for a young New Yorker out on the town. The designer paired fun, sequined dresses with practical coats. In contrast, the Alice&Blue collection struggled the most. Although certain pieces had potential, the line, as a whole, lacked cohesion.
ROBO by Lee Jae Hwan, known as Korea’s best leather goods designer, featured structured looks that were flattering and accentuated a woman’s natural form. As light poured through Hoffman Hall’s intricate stained-glass windows, it was easy to see the attention to detail throughout the line. Items were made of premium materials and hardware was placed deliberately to enhance the overall look.
TheStudioC collection played with proportions, as they paired short jackets with long shirt-dresses. Finally, D ONTHE LABEL presented a complete line of timeless elegance. One piece that stood out was an iridescent green fur vest that captured the light on the runway. Although Korean designers on the whole are not as closely followed by the international media as, say, French or Italian fashion houses, the strength of these five shows proves that they are a group with promise.
