It’s hard to imagine living in a dorm room without a door.
At Carlyle Court residence hall, nestled in Union Square, about half of the towers’ residents experience this lack of privacy every day. For the two residents who live in a quad, spending a year with their bed in the living room while their suitemates enjoy a private room just a few feet away isn’t optimal. Some try to alleviate the situation with a curtain or two, while others tape Styrofoam to block the open space between the kitchen cabinets and counters.
Aside from the lack of privacy some students face, and the struggle to combat it in creative ways, the residence hall does have its perks. The rooms are spacious, the kitchens are large enough to accommodate the dietary needs of four students and the location is unbeatable.
The Union Square subway station with the N, Q, R, 4, 5, 6 and L trains is less than 100 feet outside the lobby doors. Even though the park can be noisy and quite crowded at times, especially during the holiday season, the Carlyle Court location still manages to offer students a taste of the art and music scene in Greenwich Village.
