Centered on its ideology of food being fresh, healthy and tasty, The Hummus Shop in the Lower East Side offers a delicious and budget-friendly dining experience to all their customers.
The Hummus Shop, which opened last month, provides a variety of top quality dishes using only fresh, organic produce with no chemicals or preservatives. In reference to their namesake product, its hummus is made several times a day in an assortment of options including plain, Hummus Tahini and Hummus Trio.
“I really enjoyed the meal I had at The Hummus Shop,” said Satchie Snellings, a GLS freshman. “I could really taste how pure all the ingredients were. Everything had really unique flavors as well.”
Owner Shay Zvibak created a cozy and inviting atmosphere in his two-story restaurant, encouraging everyone to stop by and try it.
“This restaurant and the recipes were inspired by my culture [in Israel],” Zvibak said. “My main goal is to provide healthy foods from my culture at a cheap price. Our hummus tastes nothing like the store-bought variety because we never use preservatives.”
In addition to offering all natural ingredients, hummus provides a range of health benefits. Packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and protein, hummus aids in maintaining a healthy heart, lowering cholesterol and providing vital nutrients.
“As a vegetarian, I’m always looking for new places that offer a variety of vegetarian options instead of the typical salads you can get anywhere,” said Steinhardt freshman Arianna Strome.
In addition to its exceptional hummus, the restaurant provides a range of appetizers, sandwiches and desserts, the majority of which are vegan- and vegetarian-friendly.
Popular appetizer choices include grape leaves in a homemade garlic yogurt sauce or babaganoush. Some other features on the menu are Mom’s Shakshuka, the Health Sandwich and Baklava.
Yet, one of the best aspects of this restaurant is the student-friendly prices — everything on the menu is under $10.
“New York City is such an expensive place to live, it’s always helpful to find restaurants that sell high quality food in a price range everyone can afford,” said Steinhardt sophomore Atena Sheibani-Nejad.
The restaurant also offers its customers punch cards, rewarding their loyalty by providing their eighth purchase for free.
