Non-profit organization to host pizza fundraiser

October is National Pizza Month, and tonight Slice Out Hunger, a non-profit organization dedicated to feeding the hungry, will host “New York City’s Biggest Pizza Party” for the fourth year in a row.

Scott Wiener, Slice Out Hunger founder and a New Jersey native, is a full-time tour guide for his own company, Scott’s Pizza Tours, which gives introductions to New York City’s famous pizza’s history and culture.

For the fifth anniversary of Weiner’s company, pizzerias from all over New York City pitched in pie after pie to help celebrate. Slice Out Hunger will sell a slice for only $1 each and donate 100 percent of its proceeds to City Harvest, a food rescue organization in New York.

Inter-Club Council of Stern School of Business, which is a governing body of all 27 clubs within the school, will also volunteer and support Slice Out Hunger.

Trisha Goyal, a Stern sophomore and ICC underclassmen liaison, explained Stern’s role in the event.

“Our motive is to bring the student body together in a fun, engaging way while bringing awareness to social issues that are right in front of us but that many of us tend to overlook,” Goyal said.

This year, 33 pizzerias from all five boroughs will participate, and more than 4,000 slices from 473 pies will be served.

Wiener is particularly looking forward to the new pizza place that opened on the Lower East Side, Cowboy Pizza. His other favorites include Rizzo’s from Queens, Naked Pizza and Difara, a joint that normally sells its slices for $5 each.

Wiener, who writes for pizza magazines and is a professional pizza judge, could not stop expressing his love for his favorite food and his love for giving back.

“With one slice, we can help rescue 12 pounds of food,” Weiner said. “That’s a lot for one person.”

“Every business should be community-centered and give back,” he added. “It’s also a great opportunity for the pizzerias to get their names out there.”

To add to the fun, there will be raffle drawings for prizes, including a pizza party at your home, a pizza-making class and a slice of pizza preserved in resin. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance, and each one can be used for either a soda, raffle ticket or slice of pizza.

“This isn’t just a fundraiser,” Weiner said. “We want you to get something in return. Feed yourself while feeding the homeless.”

Slice Out Hunger will start at 6 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church located at 154 Sullivan St.. The ICC has organized a walking group that will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Gould Plaza and walk to the church together.
