Around two dozen students gathered in Washington Square Park on Friday afternoon before marching to the Paulson Center in protest of President Donald Trump’s newly instated administration. The group called for NYU to expand its protections for international students and defend its gender and ethnic studies programs, as well as divest from companies with ties to Israel and remove police presence from campus.
The demonstration began at Garibaldi Plaza, where members of several on-campus organizations, including NYU’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society and the NYU People’s Solidarity Coalition, condemned the new administration in a series of speeches. Holding signs that read “We refuse to accept a fascist America” and “Dare to struggle, Dare to win,” students marched east on West Fourth Street past the Gould Plaza barricade and south to the Paulson Center, which is named after Trump megadonor John Paulson, before dispersing.
Since taking office, Trump has signed dozens of executive orders, including revoking birthright citizenship, withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement and rescinding a slew of orders issued by former President Joe Biden. Pro-Palestinian organizations on campus have been calling for NYU to disclose its investment portfolio and withdraw from companies with ties to Israel for over a year, and SDS also protested Trump’s administration immediately following his win in November.
