Baseball
The baseball team lost a close game to Montclair State University 11-10 on Tuesday, March 18, before rebounding with two wins against Elmhurst University at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, on Saturday, March 22.
Powered by graduate student Cam Dunn’s solo home run, the team won the first game 4-1.
The second game ended in a 12-1 victory for the Violets, and graduate student Nate Pallotta hit his first home run of the season. NYU continued its momentum with two dominant wins over the next two days — 16-5 over Colby College and 20-3 against Purchase College.
The team finished spring break with a series at Emory University in Atlanta to open up UAA play. On Friday, March 28, the Violets lost two close matchups, 12-9 and 10-9. NYU won the third game of the series 12-3, thanks to a balanced hitting effort that saw eight different Violets get hits. NYU lost the final game of the series 19-9. In the series, Dunn had eight hits on 16 at-bats.
The Violets return to action on Friday, April 4, when the team will host Brandeis University at home at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.
Basketball
The undefeated and No. 1-ranked women’s basketball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stout 74-55 in the Final Four before defeating Smith College 77-49 to win its second straight national championship on Saturday, March 22, in Salem, VA.
Senior Belle Pellecchia scored 22 points and had seven assists in the Final Four matchup. During the championship game, Pellecchia scored 18 points, and graduate student Natalie Bruns had 16 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists.
The No. 1-ranked men’s basketball team defeated Washington University in St. Louis 72-60 in the Final Four on Thursday, March 20, in Fort Wayne, IN. The victory earned the men’s basketball team its second-ever national championship appearance. Sophomore Hampton Sanders led NYU with 20 points and made six three-pointers without a miss.
The Violets’ season ended with a heartbreaking 64-60 loss to Trinity College in the National Championship. In the loss, graduate student Tristan How had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Fencing
At the NCAA Championships at Pennsylvania State University, which took place from March 20-23, NYU was represented by first-year Anup Banerjee of the men’s team and graduate student Maria Stamos of the women’s team.
Banerjee finished 22nd out of 24 for the men’s foil fencers, while Stamos finished 12th out of 24 in the women’s foil, earning an All-American Honorable Mention.
Golf
The NYU men’s and women’s golf teams kicked off spring play at the Jekyll Island Invitational in Georgia from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 23.
The women’s team shot a +79 and tied for seventh out of 24 teams. First-year Naomi Tan led the team with a +3 score and finished 20th overall.
The men’s team finished 18th out of 30 teams with a score of +29. First-year Oscar Uribe had the best score for the men’s team — his +2 was good for 15th on the weekend.
Softball
The NYU softball team played two games in Salisbury, MD, on Sunday, March 16, losing the first against Worcester Polytechnic Institute 7-6 before bouncing back with a 2-1 win against King’s College — led by strong pitching from junior Jessie Werthman and senior Marina Egbert.
On Saturday, March 22, the Violets hosted Stockton University for a doubleheader. NYU dropped the first game 9-1 but won the second game 3-2. The next day, the Violets hosted St. Joseph’s University – Brooklyn for another doubleheader, winning the first game 11-0 and losing the second 7-4.
NYU travelled to the State University of New York, Farmingdale, on Wednesday, March 26, for its third doubleheader in five days. The Violets split the matchup with an 8-0 loss followed by a 15-8 win. In the victory, senior Olivia de Hesselle hit a triple and drove in three runs.
The team entered the weekend with a UAA matchup against Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. The Violets lost the first two matchups 2-0 and 5-4 but won the final game 13-12. Graduate student Claire Carson and junior Emma Aridi both hit home runs in the win.
Swimming & Diving
The NYU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both matched or surpassed program-high finishes as they competed in the 2025 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships from Wednesday, March 19 to Saturday, March 22, in Greensboro, NC.
The men’s team had many strong performances, highlighted by a record-breaking 48.38-second opening leg of the 400-yard relay on the final day of the tournament from sophomore Pierce Downs. Downs, first-year Maksym Nechydyuk, sophomores Greg Wehbe and Victor Derani and seniors Ajay Watanakun and Connor Vincent each earned All-American honors.
The men’s team finished fourth overall, which tied the program’s highest-ever finish.
The women’s team also had a historic tournament. Junior Nicole Ranile became the national champion in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.72. Junior Kaley McIntyre continued to build her case as one of the best athletes in NYU history with national championship results in three individual freestyle events. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Ranile, McIntyre, graduate student Elle Motekaitis and senior Isabel Oldham had a time of 7:13.02 and broke the DIII record on the way to winning the championship.
The Violets finished second overall — its highest finish in program history.
Tennis
The men’s team defeated Brandeis University 4-3 on Sunday, March 16, at the Stadium Tennis Center. The Violets’ top four singles matchups all earned victories.
The team played a week later at Skidmore College, winning 5-2. The singles play was strong, as NYU’s top five players won. Junior Boren Zheng won at the No. 1 singles spot 6-2, 6-4.
The Violets earned their eighth straight victory by a score of 5-2 on Sunday, March 30 over Ithaca College. Led by Zheng, NYU won the doubles point and earned victories at the top four singles spots.
The men’s tennis team will look to continue its momentum at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 5.
The women’s tennis team lost to Johns Hopkins University on Friday, March 21, 5-2. The team recovered the next day with a 4-3 victory over Case Western Reserve University. Graduate student Isabella Hartman won at No. 2 singles in an intense three-set match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Violets finished the weekend with a 7-0 defeat against Wesleyan University on Sunday, March 23. NYU earned a 7-0 victory a week later against Ithaca College at the Stadium Tennis Center. The team did not drop a single set in singles play.
The women’s team next plays at Williams College in Williamstown, MA, on Saturday, April 5.
Track & Field
The men’s and women’s track and field teams kicked off their outdoor seasons on Saturday, March 29. First-year Gianna Dawson, graduate student Jon Diaz and junior Lucy Gott ran in the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University.
The rest of the members competed in the Monmouth University Season Opener on Saturday, March 29, in West Long Branch, NJ. Junior Emma Grunin earned NYU’s highest individual finish, earning seventh place in the javelin throw with a 37.03m toss.
Both teams compete on Friday, April 4, at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island in Manhattan.
Volleyball
The top-ranked and undefeated men’s volleyball team continued its dominance, defeating Kean University in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-14 in Union, NJ, on Tuesday, March 18. Senior Lucas Osiecki led the team in kills and aces, and sophomore Devyn Nguyen totaled 31 assists.
NYU earned a hard-fought victory over St. John Fisher University in Rochester, NY, on Saturday, March 22. The team won the first two sets narrowly before dropping the third. The Violets came up clutch in the fourth set, winning 25-22 to secure the win.
The Violets defeated Nazareth University on Sunday, March 23, in three sets, winning 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20. Sophomore Emerson Evans led NYU with 10 kills, and Nguyen led the team in assists and digs.
