Cross Country
On Friday, the men’s and women’s teams competed in the Paul Short Invite hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. The Violets finished first of 45 teams in the Men’s College White 8K and the Women’s College White 6K, respectively.
Sophomore Ashlyn Pallotta led the charge for the women’s team, finishing fourth out of 404 runners with a time of 20:45.7. Junior Josephine Dziedzic rounded out the top five just seconds behind Pallotta with a time of 20:49.5. Three other Violets also placed in the top 20 of the women’s race.
The men’s team fared just as well, landing five runners in the top 20 out of 407. First-year Theodore Udelson-Nee finished first of the Violets, taking sixth place with a time of 24:31.7. Junior Liam Hagerty ended the race neck-in-neck with Udelson-Nee, finishing seventh with a time of 24:31.9. In 20th place was sophomore Huckleberry Oakes with a time of 24:54.0.
Both teams will be back in action on Oct. 18 for the Connecticut College Invitational in Waterford, CT.
Golf
The women’s golf team finished in second place at the Williams Fall Invitational on Sept. 28 in Williamstown, MA. The Violets earned a total team score of +29, 10 strokes behind first-place Amherst College.
Senior Tiya Chowdary ended round one with a score of +1 and round two with a score of +3, earning the lowest individual score among the Violets. First-year Inha Jun followed close behind with an individual score of +6 by the end of the competition.
The men’s team opened play at the RPI Collegiate Invitational in Albany, NY over the weekend. On Monday, the women’s team will travel to Farmington, PA for round one of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, while the men’s team will compete in round two of the RPI Collegiate Invitational.
Soccer
The women’s soccer team opened the week drawing 0-0 with the University of Scranton at home in Newark, NJ on Sept. 30.
Despite two shots on goal from sophomore forward Marlee Scanlon and another from senior midfielder Rena Kalargiros, Scranton’s three saves left NYU scoreless. Scranton made only five shots throughout the game, none of which were on goal, compared to the Violets’ 16.
On Saturday, the men’s and women’s teams were outmatched at the University of Chicago.
The women’s team lost 3-2, ending its nine-game winning streak. UChicago opened with the first goal of the game, followed by a penalty kick goal midway through the first half. NYU wouldn’t score until first-year midfielder Leah Berg landed a goal five minutes before the break. The Violets entered the second half down 2-1, and UChicago extended its lead with another penalty kick in the second period.
Sophomore midfielder Julia Spang scored at the end of the game with an assist from Kalargiros, but couldn’t break UChicago’s lead.
The men’s team fell 4-0 to UChicago, bringing its record to 1-6-1.
Despite eight saves between sophomore goalkeeper Ludvig Hilberts and junior goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey, NYU’s four shots couldn’t match UChicago’s 21, including 12 shots on goal. NYU managed three shots on goal, but remained scoreless throughout the match.
The men’s team will travel to Rutgers University-Newark on Oct. 8, and both the men’s and women’s teams will reunite at home on Oct. 11 to open UAA play against the University of Rochester at Mal Simon Stadium.
Tennis
The women’s team closed out the ITA Regional Championships on Sept. 28 with a runner-up finish from sophomore Victoria Wang, marking her second consecutive ITA Regional finals appearance.
Wang also made it to the doubles semifinals with first-year partner Sophia Yang. Sophomore partners Vera Bondarenko and Emma Kast also appeared in the semifinals, though both duos fell to their opponents.
The men’s team played in the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational on Sept. 28, taking home wins in three singles matches and three doubles matches.
On Friday, the men’s team began play at the ITA regionals, where sophomore Bryan Hui and graduate student Philip Martin advanced to Saturday’s session after successful rounds of singles matches. Martin also participated in doubles matches with graduate student Pierre Boullenger, winning 8-6 in the first round. The pair was unable to advance past the second round after an 8-1 loss.
Hui and Martin both fell in the round of 16 on Saturday, ending the Violets’ run.
The women’s team, represented by Wang, will compete in the ITA Cup on Oct. 16 in Rome, GA in its final match until February.
Volleyball
On Saturday, NYU earned dominant 3-0 wins against William Smith College and Manhattanville University at home in the Paulson Center.
Senior Ava Launsbach, the team’s leader in assists, had 22 against William Smith after receiving a commemorative ball for reaching 2,000 career assists during NYU’s UAA Round Robin last week.
After a close second match against Manhattanville, the Violets bounced back for an explosive third set, never trailing once. The team defeated Manhattanville 25-16 in the final set to bring the match to 3-0.
The Violets will travel to Cleveland, OH on Oct. 12 to compete against Brandeis University in the UAA Round Robin #2.
