Golf
The NYU women’s golf team tied Wesleyan University for second place out of 20 teams in the opening round of the Williams Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, MA.
First-year Jiayi Fu led the Violets as one of three golfers in the day who earned an even-par 71. Fu sits tied at fourth place overall heading into the second round of the tournament.
The women will return to the course on Sunday to close out the Invitational, while the men’s team is set to compete at the RPI Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Albany, NY.
Soccer
The NYU women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to six games this week.
On Sunday, Sept. 21, the Violets defeated Sarah Lawrence College 2-0 at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark, NJ. First-year Leah Berg landed her first collegiate goal in the 32nd minute, and junior forward Alexa Buxbaum added another on a penalty kick in the 48th to secure the win.
The success continued with a 11-0 shutout of John Jay College on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Randall’s Island Field #10. The Violets were hot from the jump, earning a four goal lead within the first 20 minutes of the game and never eased up on the Bloodhounds defense for the rest of the game. Junior midfielder Sari Frankl led the offense with three goals.
The week closed with a 4-0 win over Farmingdale State College on Saturday in Newark, NJ. First-year forward Sydney Freese opened the scoring in the 35th minute, before sophomore Marlee Scanlon, junior Carmen Cicerini and senior captains Hunter Hoelscher and Elizabeth Argenziano piled on the goals in the second half.
On the other hand, the men’s team fell 3-1 to Montclair State University on Wednesday, Sept. 24 in an away game at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, NJ.
During a slow first half, the Violets struck first in the 35th minute, when sophomore midfielder Joe Brancato scored to give NYU the lead. Montclair equalized the game just before halftime with a goal in the 45th minute. After a third goal by the Cardinals in the second half, the Violets struggled to come back despite three strong shots on goal in the second half.
The losing streak continued on Saturday, Sept. 27, with a 3-2 loss at home to Stevens Institute of Technology. Senior midfielder Terra Nagai tied the match 1-1 at the 44-minute mark, however the Ducks pulled ahead scoring two goals in the second half. Fifth-year forward Ethan Zarka added a late goal in the 90th minute, but NYU ran out of time to complete a comeback.
The men open UAA play on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the University of Chicago. The women will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30 against the University of Scranton.
Tennis
The NYU men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the TCNJ Lions Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 21, winning four out of the nine singles matches and one doubles match in the non-team scoring event.
The Violets then traveled to Swarthmore, PA on Saturday, Sept. 27 for the Swarthmore/Haverford Invitational, where they recorded three wins in both doubles and singles. Against Haverford College, the duos of sophomore Bryan Hui and graduate student Philip Martin, first-year Jeh-Lei Fan and Rahul Sundaresan and sophomore Andy Chen and first-year Nikita Makaed won their doubles matches 8-0, 8-6 and 8-5, respectively.
Against Hamilton College, NYU claimed three singles matches with Martin winning 6-2, 6-1, Sundaresan winning 6-4, 6-4 and sophomore Boris Slesarev winning 6-3, 7-5.
The women’s team opened the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Championships in Saratoga Springs, NY on Friday, Sept. 26 earning four singles wins and going undefeated in doubles.
Competition continued Saturday at the ITA Regional Championships, where two doubles teams reached the semifinals. The sophomore duo of Emma Kast and Vera Bondarenko advanced after winning their first two matches 8-4. Sophomore Victoria Wang and first-year Sophia Yang joined their teammates in the semifinals after 8-5, 8-4 matches, respectively. In addition, Wang also advanced to the singles semifinals after a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 Round of 16 win and a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 quarterfinal win.
Both teams will close out the invitational on Sunday, Sept. 28.
Volleyball
The NYU women’s volleyball team opened UAA play at the UAA Round Robin #1 on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Atlanta, GA.
The Violets pushed No. 5 Washington University in St. Louis but fell in five sets, winning the second and fourth 25-22 and 28-26 but losing the first, third and fifth 26-24, 25-22 and 15-11. Senior setter Ava Launsbach led the team with 33 assists.
NYU bounced back in its second match defeating the University of Chicago, winning the second, third and fourth sets 25-19, 26-24 and 25-18 after dropping the first set 10-25. Launsbach again led the team with 24 assists.
Ranked No. 33, the Violets return to the court on Sunday at 10 a.m. to face the University of Rochester.
