Golf
The NYU men’s golf team finished play at the Duke Nelson Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College in Vermont, on Sunday, Sept. 14. A strong final round moved the Violets up five spots on the leaderboard to finish the invitational, tied for seventh place out of 20 teams.
First-year Bryan Zhao finished in 10th place, out of over one hundred players, following a strong final day. He scored even on Sunday and had an overall score of five over at the invitational. NYU finished with +39 for the team’s total.
The Violets return to action on Oct. 5 at the RPI Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany, NY.
The women’s golf team continued play at the NCAA Preview, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Palm Desert, CA on Sunday, Sept. 14.
The Violets finished in third place out of 15 teams with an even-par overall score. Sophomore Naomi Tan led NYU with a tournament score of -5, finishing in second place overall.
The women’s golf team returns to play on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Williams College Fall Invitational, in Williamstown, MA.
Soccer
The men’s soccer team won its first game of the season at home on Sunday, Sept. 14, with a dominant 4-0 victory against Misericordia University at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark, NJ.
Graduate student and forward Giulio Potenti scored a brace, and sophomore goalkeeper Ludvig Hilberts earned his first clean sheet.
NYU took on Drew University on Saturday, Sept. 20 in Madison, NJ, ending the game in a 0-0 draw. A strong performance by junior goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey and the back four kept the Rangers scoreless.
The men’s soccer team plays next on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ.
The women’s soccer team easily defeated William Paterson University 5-0 at home on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark, NJ.
Sophomore forward Marlee Scanlon had two goals and an assist, and sophomore midfielder Julia Spang scored one goal and had an assist. The Violets’ strong overall effort led to William Paterson not recording a single shot on goal.
At home on Saturday, Sept. 20, the women’s soccer team defeated No. 23-ranked Vassar College 2-1. Senior midfielder Rena Kalargiros scored the first goal for NYU, and Scanlon scored the second. NYU never trailed in the match.
The Violets played at home on Sunday, Sept. 21 against Sarah Lawrence College and will travel to Randall’s Island on Sept. 24 to take on John Jay College.
Tennis
The NYU men’s tennis team played five doubles matches and nine singles matches in a non-competitive event on Saturday, Sept. 20 at The College of New Jersey Lions Tournament in Ewing, NJ.
The men’s team is warming up to compete in the Swarthmore/Haveford Invitational this weekend in Swarthmore, PA.
The NYU women’s tennis team competed in the TCNJ Lions Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 14. In the no-team-scoring event, the Violets played 10 singles matches and five doubles matches.
This weekend, the women’s team looks forward to competing in the three-day ITA Northeast Championships in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team opened the Ithaca Invitational in Ithaca, NY with a loss against the No. 20-ranked Ithaca College on Friday, Sept. 19.
Despite junior outside hitter Grace Nelson’s 19 kills, the Violets were defeated in four sets, losing the first two 25-19 and 26-24, winning the third 25-23 and falling in the final set 25-19.
The Violets bounced back the next day with a victory against Smith College, winning 25-9, 25-21 and 25-14. Nelson led NYU with 11 kills, and senior setter Ava Launsbach had 16 assists.
NYU continued its momentum later that day with a 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-18 victory over Swarthmore College. Again, Nelson led the way with 18 kills and Launsbach led with 31 assists. First-year middle blocker Sienna Morales had a game-high four blocks.
The Violets will travel to the UAA Round Robin #1 hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, GA. next week. NYU begins play against Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, Sept. 27.
