Apart from the cultural immersion, the first things that stood out to me about Chinatown were its striking colours and bright lights illuminated from restaurant signs and street art. Despite these pictures being monochromatic, I believe the vibrance of this beautiful neighbourhood comes across through the people and their interaction with this dynamic area.

You’ll never have a boring day when walking through Washington Square Park.

I think what’s quintessentially New York City to me is the ubiquity of diversity. The city was built by immigrants, and as it grows, it will continue to be. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, there’s a place for you here.

One of the things people immediately associate with New York City are the tall buildings, of course including the Empire State Building. For me, I picture exploring Little Island during the first days of spring as the city begins to defrost and flowers begin to bloom on the trees again. I captured the Empire State Building through the trees of Little Island, which blended my two versions of the city.

My first memory of the Brooklyn Bridge was from the TV series “Person of Interest.” Visiting it in person, you can see how New York blurs the line between screen and reality, bringing a surreal yet chill experience alongside it.

Is there anything more “city” than shiny, wet pavement reflecting neon signs?

The exciting, iconic and comforting lower Manhattan skyline.

I took this photo when autumn was just starting and all the leaves were turning color. I was having a bit of a weird day so I decided to take my camera with me up to Central Park and people watch!

One of the first weeks after moving here, I walked at night to Grand Central Terminal to explore. The cab was rushing around the corner while people were jaywalking; it felt very New York City.

I took this photo while walking across the Manhattan Bridge on a night out. One of the best views I’ve ever seen in the city so far.

I’m always amazed by the incredible variety of scenery in New York City, even within Manhattan itself. Standing in Midtown, you’re surrounded by towering skyscrapers. Yet just a few blocks away, you step into Central Park, where trees and nature replace the steel and glass.

To me, what encapsulates New York City are two things: pigeons and pizza.
