Cuomo’s claim that reduced State funding “won’t cost New York City a penny” is patently absurd. Under the guise of cost-saving, Albany is trying to shift education costs from its budget onto the city and students who can least afford it.
The governor should take care not to pat himself on the back for this singular effort, which does not address the main causes of homelessness and only forces the most underprivileged and neglected into bad conditions.
To improve NY public schools, policymakers should focus on improving the socioeconomic factors that contribute to school performance, rather than cracking down on teachers.
