My friends and I flew down to South Beach, Florida. We then rented a car and drove up to Seaside, Florida for a few days, then drove up to Manhattan. Twenty-seven-hour road trips are fun with the right people. And a film camera.

My sister, Jaya, and I got lucky enough that our spring breaks aligned this year, so we spent three days driving up the California coastline. We saw enough beaches to rival our childhood and went on so many hikes that I finally caved and downloaded Strava — but the best moment of the trip was seeing actual constellations for the first time. Pretty much everywhere I’ve lived has had too much light pollution for a proper view of them, but three hours north of San Francisco, the whole sky was laid out in front of me.

I spent my break seeking out the sun and nature as my family and I took a trip to Palm Desert, California. Along the way, we made a few stops to see Desert X — a series of contemporary installations spread around Palm Desert that highlights the role of humans and technology in the evolution of nature, using the surrounding elements of the desert to its advantage. I visited five of the 13 installations, this one being “To Breathe,” a spiral of translucent glass panels that reflect a spectrum of colors from the never-ending sunshine. When I wasn’t out in the desert, I was enjoying the blooming cherry blossoms at Balboa Park in San Diego.

For our last spring break, my friends and I went to Puerto Rico. I took this photo at Isla Verde Beach, while my two friends were suntanning and the rest of us hid in the shade.

This spring break, I traded New York City pigeons for Southern California seagulls. Just a quick drive from my house, the Hermosa Beach Pier extends more than 1,100 feet into the Pacific Ocean, where the water shimmers in vibrant shades of blue and green. I walked along the pier with one of my friends from high school as we updated each other on our past few months of college. Before I came to NYU, I took living by the beach for granted — now, it serves as a treasured reminder of old friends and the comfort of home.

My friends and I took a road trip to Washington, D.C., for the museums and the cherry blossoms. My roommate, who is studying film and television, let me use his Sony FX3, so I spent the time pretending I was a photographer — and worrying I was going to drop the camera and pay thousands of dollars. These photos were taken around the Tidal Basin.
