Against the backdrop of a dewy, sunlit forest, Badgley Mischka presented their Spring/Summer 2013 collection of delicate, romantic looks fit for a Shakespearean fairy queen.
In frothy hues of blush, moss, ivory, peach, mint, lilac and sky, the collection was feminine to the point of twee. However, unique details such as embroidered lace gloves, capes and messy, unkempt hair kept it feeling fresh and modern.
The collection opened with a highlight – a nude crepe jumpsuit with an attached cape-like top and delicate jeweled flowers encircling the model’s neck. Following suit were decidedly feminine pieces, delicate blouses and poufy skirts tempered by loosely structured blazers and classic high waisted pants.
Unique fabrics – cellophane tweed, hologram tweed, lamé brocade, and tie-dyed leather elevated each piece beyond just another girly wardrobe and gave it a slightly space cadet edge. Tweed was made light and effervescent (far from your grandmother’s Chanel) in the luminous gold fabric. Ornate brocade became spring appropriate in delicate fabrics and demure shapes.
Other stand out looks included a fairy queen confection in smoke lace with delicate chiffon petals fluttering across the bodice and a quartz colored organza gown with an exaggerated peplum encrusted in embroidery.
Badgley Mischka shines most when their gowns strike a balance between overdone and blank canvases in chiffon. The most notable designs were enhanced by sparkle and shine, not overshadowed by it. Some gowns – the final coral organza, and an over embellished sheer chiffon number, appeared to overwork the delicate fabrics.
Scalloped hemlines, tulle flutter sleeves, sheer fabrics and the favored peplum were reoccurring trends throughout the show.
