While most NYU students were away from campus during winter break, our Violets stayed busy, competing throughout December and January, both at home and away. Here’s what you need to know about varsity athletics to start the spring semester.
Basketball
The women’s basketball team is undefeated with a 14-0 record, and is looking to win its second NCAA Championship in a row. The Violets played and won six games over the break, with an average win margin of almost 43 points. The team’s last three games, played Jan. 11, 17 and 19, were UAA matchups, earning NYU the top spot in UAA standings.
The men’s team is currently 13-1 this season and played six games over winter break, including three UAA matchups. Their one loss to Emory University on Jan. 17 earned them the second spot in UAA rankings. The men’s basketball team also hosted its second annual NYU Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30, beating Purchase College and Williams College to take home the win.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams return to action on Jan. 24 in Pittsburgh, PA to face off against Carnegie Mellon University.
Fencing
The men’s and women’s fencing teams traveled to the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 18. The men’s team went 3-3, defeating the University of North Carolina, The Pennsylvania State University and Duke University. The women’s team won two of its five matchups, securing wins over UNC and Johns Hopkins University.
The Violets will return to the strip to face Hunter College and celebrate Senior and Alumni Day at the Paulson Center on Jan. 24.
Swimming & Diving
The women’s swimming and diving team is currently 4-1 for the season, after dropping its matchup against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and winning over Williams College and Gettysburg College on Jan. 17 and 18, respectively.
The women’s team is currently ranked third and will travel to West Chester, PA on Jan. 25 to face West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
The men’s team is ranked first with a 7-0 record following back-to-back meets over winter break. The Violets swept MIT, Williams College and Gettysburg College, and will join the women’s team in West Chester, PA this weekend.
Track & Field
The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 17. The meet was a non-team scoring competition, so individual athletes’ scores were not tallied for a team score.
There were two Violet victories — one from first-year Gianna Dawson in the 800m, with a time of 2:18:16, and the other from junior Travis Perry, who tied for first in the 60m dash with a personal best of 7.07.
The teams have their next meet on Jan. 24 at The Armory for the Dr. Sanders Scorcher, hosted by Columbia University.
Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team started its season over break with an away tour of three back-to-back matches. Before starting the 2025 season, the Violets were ranked second in the nation by the coaches in the AVCA Division III Preseason Poll. Proving the momentum from last season is still going, the team won its first three matches of the season against the Illinois Institute of Technology, Benedictine University and North Central College, earning a 3-0 record.
On Thursday, the Violets played their home opener at the Paulson Center against Hunter College, netting a 3-0 win and improving the team’s record to 4-0. Conference play will begin on Feb. 22.
Wrestling
The wrestling team competed in the UAA Challenge, Mariner Duals and the NY/PA Duals over winter break, going 6-2 to bring the team’s overall record to 11-4.
The Violets celebrated their seven graduating seniors at the NY/PA Duals, proceeding to sweep the three matchups, defeating Wilkes University 31-18, Keystone College 55-0 and the Pennsylvania College of Technology 36-14.
The team competes in Ewing, NJ on Jan. 25 to face off against The College of New Jersey.
