For this edition, we asked staff and contributors how food is represented in their photography.

This photo was taken in the one-credit Steinhardt course called Food Photography. Taught by Professor Michael Turkell, the class was such a unique experience! He takes you through the entire process of photographing food, from cooking to being intentional about all the props that go into a composition. Being WSN’s illustration editor, I never thought that photography could be my niche, but this class made me believe that maybe I had the skill to do more. It gave me a newfound appreciation for all the effort and skill that goes into photography. Shoutout to Kiran, photo editor at WSN, for lending me her camera to take this photo!

Two photos from WSN’s spring 2024 Under The Arch magazine issue: “The Dinner Party, redefined.” My inspiration was commensality, the act of eating together, a word I learned in my first-year fall semester two-credit food studies class.

Two of my favorite recipes I made the summer before my first year at NYU: Claire Saffitz’s Kouign-amann and Eric Kim’s frosted sugar cookies. I miss baking a lot now that I’m without a kitchen.

A summer squash growing at NYU’s Urban Farm Lab last September, ready for harvest. Agriculture spaces throughout the city, such as the Farm Lab and other community gardens, give us a glimpse into the amount of work — both human and plant — done to bring food to our plates.
