Tandon Names Jelena Kovačević as its First Female Dean

Jelena Kovačević was named dean of NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering today by President Andrew Hamilton and Provost Katherine Fleming, the first woman dean in the 164 years since the institution was founded in 1854.

Kovačević will be departing from Carnegie Mellon University where she is currently the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Kovačević has been a professor of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon since 2003 and was named the Hamerschlag University Professor in 2016. Kovačević received her bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade and her Masters of Science and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.
Kovačević will replace the current dean, Katepalli R. Sreenivasan, effective August 15, 2018.
