NYU Langone Health completed its merger with Long Island Community Hospital earlier this month, officially branding its seventh inpatient facility as NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk. The move expands the medical center’s presence in Long Island and brings in specialty services and medical technologies not previously offered at the site.
While this is the first time the institutions stand as one legal entity, Long Island Community Hospital has been affiliated with NYU Langone since March 2022. In subsequent years, the hospital saw over 50% more surgical procedures, 25% fewer hospital-acquired conditions and significantly shorter wait times and lengths of stay.
“Our newest hospital has made incredible strides in quality and safety to better serve patients in Suffolk County,” NYU Langone CEO Robert Grossman said in the press release. “The completion of this merger, along with the expansion of our outpatient locations in the local community, marks a new era of healthcare exceptionalism on Long Island.”
Marc Adler, senior vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, also said that the merger marks a critical moment for health care in the region by catering to growing needs of the county. Over the past five years, Suffolk county has seen heightened concern surrounding chronic disease, behavioural issues and other socioeconomic disparities.
Since the two hospitals affiliated, NYU Langone has hired more than 100 physicians, introduced advanced robotic surgical techniques and reopened the Long Island Community Hospital’s psychiatry center. NYU Langone also spearheaded new cancer and neurological treatment offerings that have attracted more than 4,000 new patients since May 2023.
“The merger of these two incredible organizations is a critical moment for the future of health care on Long Island,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said in the press release. “More than 400,000 residents in the region will now have expanded access to world-class services and physicians, continuing NYU Langone’s legacy of medical excellence.”
Outside of the merger, NYU Langone has made several efforts to bolster its presence in Long Island in recent months. In January 2024, the medical center opened its 260,000-square-foot ambulatory care center — now the largest on the island. NYU Langone has since opened new lab spaces, made $6 million improvements to postpartum units and proposed an 11.5 million clinic for pediatric care in counties across Long Island.
