NYU does not have the authority to defy the federal government, and barring future court rulings regarding the deportations and the travel ban it is likely that it never will. Instead of trying to turn the university into a sovereign entity within the state of New York, these misguided protesters would be better off using their time and resources to combat unjust travel bans in a more informed, constructive context.

The Kimmel Galleries are currently home to one of the biggest exhibits they've ever hosted, both in terms of sheer size and scope. "Unnatural Election: Artists Respond to the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election” is exactly what it sounds like on a scale that will astound.
The consequences for drinking are much less severe than those of using marijuana — this mirrors how pot is treated in society as well. However, the number of weed-related incidents is much lower than that of alcohol's rates, so the university should reconsider its ambiguous and severe drug policy surrounding marijuana.

In light of the decriminalization of marijuana in New York, NYU should lessen several of its policies against its use to liken those against alcohol use on campus and set an example for other colleges with harsher penalties.
