Basketball
The No. 1-ranked women’s basketball team beat Carnegie Mellon University 91-62 on Friday, bringing its season record to 15-0.
NYU came out strong, with a 16-2 lead just over four minutes into the game.
The Violets never lost their early momentum and closed with a 29-point win to keep their perfect record this season.
After setting a career-high 24 points in the match against Emory University last week, junior Caroline Peper continued to score big, breaking her personal record again, earning 27 points against the Tartans. Sophomore Brooke Batchelor added 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Violets continued its weekend with a dominant victory against Case Western Reserve University on Sunday. They added another win to their undefeated 16-0 record with a 107-31 win.
Graduate student Natalie Bruns, senior Belle Pellecchia, first-year Zahra Alexander and Batchelor all scored double digits. Bruns was the highest scorer of the game with 18 points.
The No. 6-ranked men’s basketball team beat Carnegie Mellon in a close matchup on Friday, defeating the Tartans 96-90.
Jack Stone, a four-year team member at Carnegie Mellon before coming to NYU for graduate school, led the Violets with a season high of 27 points.
Graduate student Tristian How put up a double-double with 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while senior Zay Freeney and graduate student Brock Susko also scored in double figures for the Violets.
Though the entire game was neck-and-neck, the Violets secured a strong finish in the fourth quarter, with sophomore Hampton Sanders’ two end-of-game free throws and Stone’s seven-point run, helping secure the win.
The men’s basketball team finished off the weekend with a victory against CWRU on Sunday afternoon. The Violets improved their record to 15-1 with an 80-73 win.
Susko led the scoring for NYU with 19 points.
The men’s and women’s basketball teams both return to action on Friday, Jan. 31, traveling to Illinois to face the University of Chicago.
Fencing
The men’s and women’s fencing teams put up strong performances at home on Senior Day, with both posting victories over Hunter College on Friday. The men’s team swept Hunter 27-0, with saber fencers junior Jerry Pan, first-year Ansh Ghayalod and junior Faaris Hussain winning their matchups.
The women followed closely, dropping one competition for a final victory of 26-1. Seniors Claudia Meyer and Renee Wu went 3-0 in foil, while seniors Hannah Hoverman and Sharon Ni did the same in saber.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Cambridge, MA, facing off against Harvard University.
Swimming & Diving
The No. 5-ranked women’s team and No. 2-ranked men’s team beat Division II West Chester University 179-64 and 131-112 respectively on Saturday to finish its dual meet season. The women’s record is 5-1, and the men are undefeated, 8-0.
Junior Kaley McIntyre won each of her three events, including the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle. First-year Maksym Nechydyuk won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.
Senior Issara Schmidt and sophomore Maya Williams placed first and second, respectively, in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Senior William Hopkins finished second in the 3-meter dive.
The Violets will race again at the UAA Championships in Atlanta, GA, Feb. 12-15.
Track & Field
The men’s and women’s track & field teams ran in the Dr. Sander Scorcher, hosted by Columbia University on Friday.
Sophomore Julian Aske set an NCAA Division III-leading time of 1:50.85, which was the seventh-best time of the day in the men’s 800m run.
Senior Ryan Tobin also set an NCAA Division III-leading time for this season thus far, and personal best in the 3,000m run, recording a time of 8:10.97. He ended with a seventh-place finish.
Both Aske and Tobin set NYU program records in their events.
A Violet record was also set by first-year Gianna Dawson in the women’s 800m run. She earned fourth place in the race and ended with the NCAA’s eighth-best time this season.
Junior Janie Cooper finished in ninth place in the women’s 3,000m run with a personal best of 9:40.17. This was the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.
Other members of the men’s and women’s track & field teams went to Philadelphia, PA, for the Widener Winter Evening Invite on Friday.
Graduate student Oliver Fideler placed seventh in the men’s long jump with a distance of 6.34m. Junior Dasha Jackson placed eighth in the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 9.60.
Throwers for the men’s track & field team competed in the shot put on the second day of the Widener Winter Evening Invite on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Junior Daniel Lee finished with a personal record of 12.99m, which earned him 17th place.
Members of both the men’s and women’s squads return to action next Friday, Jan. 31, competing in the Scarlet Knight Open hosted by Rutgers University.
Volleyball
The No. 2-ranked men’s volleyball team swept Hunter College to start its 2025 season at home.
The Violets beat the Hawks in each set with scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-22, and sophomore Emerson Evans led the team with nine kills.
The men’s volleyball team continued with two matches on Saturday at the Paulson Center. The Violets competed against New Jersey City University and Arcadia University.
The team is undefeated, winning both matches and increasing their record to 6-0.
In their first match, the Violets beat NJCU in straight sets, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22. Evans led the team with 12 kills and six digs. Sophomore Devyn Nguyen had 21 assists, steering the offense to a .472 team hitting percentage.
Saturday’s first victory of the day was head coach José Piña’s 425th win with the Violets.
The second match against Arcadia also ended with a victory, winning in straight sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16. Evans led with 13 kills and seniors Ry Kagan and Lucas Osiecki led the blocking with three each.
The Violets return to the Paulson Center on Wednesday to face Baruch College.
Wrestling
The No. 20-ranked wrestling team lost to the No. 14-ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday in Ewing, NJ.
With a score of 7-35, the Violets’ record in dual meets dropped to 11-5, with NYU only winning two of the 10 matchups of the day.
Three-time All-American senior Cooper Pontelandolfo defeated J.J. Giordano at 157 lbs, finishing with a 16-2 win.
The Violets will compete next against the No. 19-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday, Jan. 31 in Hoboken, NJ.
