NYU Langone Health was named the No. 1 comprehensive academic medical center in a national quality of care ranking based on complication rates, length of stay and patient experience scores, marking its fourth consecutive year in the spot.
Vizient Inc., a leading U.S. company focused on improving healthcare performance, evaluated
118 medical centers based on “safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness and variation in care.” Last month, NYU received the best score in its “comprehensive academic medical center” cohort and had two of its locations ranked in the top 10 for its “large, specialized complex care medical center” cohort.
The company’s ranking of ambulatory care, based on accessibility, quality and variation in care, also recognized NYU Langone as having the No. 1 physician practice out of 66 healthcare networks in the United States for the 10th time in the last 12 years.
“This recognition demonstrates the exceptional quality and safety standards that allow NYU Langone to offer top-quality care to patients across all of our locations,” Alec Kimmelman, dean of NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine and CEO of NYU Langone, said in a press release. “It reflects the work of our dedicated and talented teams every day on the front lines and behind the scenes.”
NYU Langone was the only New York-based hospital named in the top 10 academic medical centers. In the category of “large, specialized complex care medical center,” NYU’s Long Island hospital was ranked No. 3 while its Brooklyn hospital was ranked No. 6.
The titles come after NYU Langone faced immense criticism in the last year for issues relating to patient care accessibility. Although the hospital received a perfect score in LGBTQ+ care in 2024, it faced backlash for canceling at least two patients’ gender-affirming care in February following an executive order from the Trump administration. Numerous employees have also sued the medical center, alleging disability-based discrimination.
NYU Langone announced several expansions over the past year, most recently its new gastrointestinal cancer facility and $83 million in add-ons to its main site in Kips Bay.
