Walking in beneath a canopy of branches, attendees to the debut of Yeohlee Teng’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection are presented with the beauty of Jones Wood Garden. Surrounded by townhouses and cut off from the urbanity of the city, the atmosphere is paradise-like: intimate and serene. It is this beauty and serenity that influences Yeohlee’s collection. When asked about the space, she comments, “I was very inspired by the ambiance of the venue and the colors of the garden. I feel that as urbanites our environment is pretty harsh, so this is like a nice moment and something to enjoy. And I think that it affected perhaps the palette of the collection.”
The models float down the runway in minimalistic, natural hair and makeup. Their simplistic look reflects and compliments the construction of the garments which ebb and flow with the breeze. All of the clothes are tied together in their soft, loose-fitting look. While some pieces are very clearly structured, the powdery pinks, greens, and greys of the color palette create the effect of softness.
Yeohlee’s fashion is simple, yet elegant. Most of all, it is fully functional. Yeohlee designs for “everybody” and explains that, “designing clothing [is] a service and if I do it well it saves you time, it enables you to function comfortably, and it gives you confidence.” The lightness of the materials used, paired with expert construction portray a modern look at clothing as something made to be both beautiful and functional for an active, everyday woman.
