Inspired by nighttime urban landscapes, Milly by Michelle Smith’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection “Illumination” at New York Fashion Week incorporated all aspects of a vibrant night in the city. The show began with a crocodile-embossed leather sweatshirt paired with a matching pencil skirt and a black metallic clutch. Following the first look, many of the looks exuded the essence of twilight—hologram blue clutches, black and cobalt checkered prints and various textured cobalt pieces.
Milly’s initial looks suggested a subdued, dark-colored collection, but coral and silver pieces were added to the mix, contrasting beautifully with dark wool and charcoal fabrics. What most stood out about the collection were the fabrics. Beyond black, the line incorporated a teal inkblot-style fabric, reminiscent of shadows, in the form of mini skirt paired with a teal sweater complimented by leather shoulder patches.
Tailored menswear-inspired pieces were in abundance in Milly’s collection. One all-violet look featured tailored trousers paired with both a cardigan sweater and a collared sweater under an impressively tailored coat. The look was contrasted by touches of black leather sleeves on the jacket and a collar on the sweater.
With their relaxed ponytails and clean makeup, the models looked modern and polished. Accentuated by sportswear and bright fabrics, Milly’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection show hints of a bright, relaxed fall season to look forward to.
