As a Rolling Stones remix blared through the speakers at Lincoln Center, models in A-line mini dresses and color block tracksuits graced the runway debuting Richard Chai’s Spring 2013 collection. Chai, who formerly designed for Marc by Marc Jacobs, captured the attention of his audience members with athletic inspired clothing and bold silhouettes.
The collection featured a variety of colors, from subdued pastels in shades of blue to striking metallics. Pieces included an uber-short flared tennis skirt and chic nylon trench coats for both men and women. Toeing the line between edgy and preppy, the outfits were a twist on classic American sportswear. Models featured minimal makeup and slicked back hair or ponytails with deep side parts.
Men’s looks included monochromatic nylon polos and cotton trousers in shades of white, blue and yellow. Standout women’s pieces included a vibrant yellow shorts pantsuit with matching blouse that had an incredibly retro feel as well as adding a much needed pop of color to the show. Other looks included cut-out dresses in color blocked grey and flirty floral prints as well as a cotton denim miniskirt paired with a white silk blouse cropped shirt.
The last few outfits included a metallic hologram ruched dress and a pair of gold and onyx silk biker shorts. These metallic outfits contrasted with the soft, muted colors of the previous pieces. Overall Chai delivered and presented a spectacular and refreshing collection for the Spring 2013 season. Whitney Port sat front row among other Fashion heavyweights.
