Amid controversy, Glenn Beck filmed the newest installment of "The Christmas Sweater — A Return to Redemption" at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts last night. NCM Fathom and Mercury Radio Arts hosted the private event.

During the event, Beck spoke about the events in his life that inspired his narrative, "The Christmas Sweater."

Members of the community, including representatives from the Judson Memorial Church and Color of Change, came to protest the event.

Color of Change has been campaigning since last summer against Beck's accusations that President Obama is racist. They said they have been able to convince 80 advertisers to stop advertising during Beck's show "because of its divisiveness and its hatred," said Duncan Meisel, a member of Color of Change, NYU alumnus and former member of Take Back NYU.

Meisel added: "We are here to continue to support the campaign to make sure Mr. Beck knows that what he's doing to our country is unacceptable."

Church groups were upset at Beck's use of Christian imagery and Christmas as a way to disseminate what they call his largely hateful message. They believe the way Beck addresses women, people of color and immigrants is incompatible with the Christian ethic.

"It is outside Biblical narrative," said Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou, senior minister at Lemuel Haynes Congregational Church. "We are a small church saying we are opposed to constant racist language."

Several members of the Tea Party (of the Tea Party protests) gathered outside of Skirball to support Beck.

Michele Russo, a 50-year-old Long Island resident, said though Beck's past may not be perfect, he is now championing a good cause.

"[Glenn] is like every other American that might have done some stupid things in their youth," she said. "They get older, and they get wiser, and they start realizing what family values really are."

Attendees of Beck's event were unfazed by the commotion.

"They're willing to do whatever because it's a free country, but I'm on Glenn Beck's side," said Mary Smith, a 52-year-old New Jersey resident. "I read his book and I find it interesting. It's a really beautiful story."

Church groups ought to be very glad that Glenn isn't afraid to acknowledge God. The man is doing a lot of good right now. Be thankful someone is standing up for America. I sincerely appreciate and respect him for his honesty and bravery, in addition to being a teriffic actor.

Yes, I always find it particularly heartwarming when he feigns tears via the use of Vicks VapoRub beneath his eyes. And what could be nicer than when he does his "nudge-nudge-wink-wink" thing in regard to violence against the President? I mean, hey, it's all in good fun, right?

You know, the President of the US who was elected by a considerable margin. Just last year. Remember?

The difference is proof ! Glenn Beck doesn't make claims without providing
proof. His detracters can't . Who then really cares about those in need ?

If Glenn's the example of a good Christian Babs, then I'm really glad I'm no longer one.

Dear Babs,

You have got to be joking. Acknowledging God doesn't give Glenn Beck permission to spew hateful rhetoric. God and religion is not about hating your neighbor, arming yourself to the teeth because you're afraid the world is going to end, and comparing anyone who disagrees with you to nazis, communists, socialists, etc. And this is anti-American as well. But I guess in your definition of America, only White, rich, Christian Republicans are welcome.

As another has noted on a different site detailing the protest- Glenn Beck is twisting the message of Christian love and acceptance, and is marching down the road to being a complete fascist- wrapped in the flag and carrying his Bible. I hope he gets met with protests where ever he travels

Babs, I truly appreciate the satire you've provided readers of this article with your post. You're doing a lot of good by pretending that Glenn Beck is anything but a corrosive taint on the political discussion in the US of A.

Beck is the only person consistantly asking questions and making very good points. I don't agree with him on everything, but he's right that we are nosediving into bankruptcy and the gov is lying to us about it.

As far as Obama being racist: I think there's credible evidence that he prefers ppl of color. For example, where was the white side of his family at the Inauguration? Did anyone see them? I didn't. And why did Obama assume the cops overreacted in the case of Prof Gates? Why did Holder/Obama drop the charges against the New Black Panther voter intimidators WHO WERE ARMED and insulted white voters calling them "crackers' in front of a polling place? Would KKK members be let off scott free if they insulted ppl of color in front of a polling place?

Explain those things, pls.

Finally: a Christmas performance about redemption is not really a smart place to hold a protest. Better to protest when something political is happening, not spiritual.

libertynow- love your logic. Pro-choice liberals want babies dead, just like pro-life conservatives who are also against universal health-care want babies dead (ie US has highest infant mortality rate of developed countries because of insufficient access to adequate pre-natal care)

The few here that complain that Beck is always negative towards Obama, have short memories. For eight years the libs and dems have HATED BUSH. There were songs, movies, and bumper stickers portraying Bush's death ! Hypocrisy on top of stupid is ... As you libs like to chant, UNCONSCIONABLE.

Meisel added: "We are here to continue to support the campaign to make sure Mr. Beck knows that what he's doing to our country is unacceptable."

What is he doing to our country? He's exercising his freedom of speech to criticize our president. Although I disagree with most of former president Bush's policies, people criticized and attacked him left and right. I'm surprised people are shocked and outraged by the views that Glenn Beck has expressed. Are people upset that he is critical of our president? Shouldn't we all be? The worst that he is "doing to our country" is possibly disillusioning many Obama supporters, but as a country, we should be used to the feeling of disillusionment from former presidents.

he's bringing public discourse down by insinuating the president is a terrorist, comparing him to hitler, hijacking 9/11 (the nonsensical 9/12 movement) and giving racist winguts a home.

Based on your reaction and on the string of comments and anger on this post, I'd say he's brought public discourse up. After all, he is first and foremost an entertainer.

Beck is a rip off artist and steals all his material from Savage, the difference being that Savage has a brain and Beck is too incompetent to come across as a sincere person because he only cares about making headlines. He's also a cry baby.
