Letter from the Editors

Dear readers,

It’s no secret that NYU students know how to get around.

New York City runs on transportation. Pedestrians, bikers and taxi drivers vie for the right of way on nearly every block, while subways and buses move people en masse. The ability to access over 300 square miles of vibrant communities is among the most intoxicating parts of living in the city — and by extension, being an NYU student.

Whether you’re coming from Weinstein Hall or the Bronx, your commute sets the scene for your time on campus. Your beeline through Astor Place, go-to Union Square subway entrance and favorite Citi Bike dock are what start and end your day. While these names and places might vary, they’re all part of a larger network that keeps the city, and its students, in motion.

These nuances are what we tried to capture throughout The Commuter Issue. Our reporters and editors delved into the rapidly evolving culture of taxis, jaywalking and Citi Bikes, and covered what it means for transportation to be accessible in a city where millions of people rely on public transit. Photographers documented artwork decorating subway stations and the bikers carrying New York’s food delivery scene.

The Commuter Issue would not have been possible without our Deputy Magazine Editors John Bush and Colette Yehl, who wrote, edited and webbed stories across this issue. A special thanks to our Creative Director Julia Smerling and Multimedia Editor Kyra Reilley for bringing this issue and its cover to life, and to Lauren Ng, Krish Dev, Anjali Mehta and Sidney Snider for overseeing its production. As always, thank you to our copy team — Alice Carlile, Sam Kats, Ella Sabrina Malabanan and Nghi Nguyen — for helping edit each piece. Your work does not go unrecognized.

Finally, to our readers: WSN thanks you for supporting us, and we hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Sincerely,

Dharma Niles
