While Sexton has been recognized for his skillful debating, free speech has never been a center of his platform, making the choice to have Sexton headline this particular event confusing. Furthermore, Sexton’s tenure at NYU was filled with inexcusable mistakes, and he should never be an honoree at this university.

Just as a doctor learns to call what is often called the funny bone the ulnar nerve, educated people learn that the veil often worn by Muslim women is a hijab, not a funny scarf.
To deem an entire class of speech as illegitimate, and not only illegitimate, but should be expectant of punishment, violence, and even the threat of ‘shutdown,’ as urged in multiple opinion articles published by WSN, is entirely antithetical to who we are as members of a university.
NYU claims that its Liberal Studies program provides students with a well-rounded liberal arts education, while also allowing them to explore other areas of interest. In reality, LS plagues students with endless core classes that leave very little room for classes that do not directly count towards their major.
President Hamilton should publicly announce solidarity with NYUSJP. To do otherwise would entirely contradict NYU’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
No, NYU should not strip “the College Republicans of its affiliation until it can show responsibility and reasonable conduct,” in fact, it should do the complete opposite. New York University should condemn hate groups like ANTIFA who shut down free speech.
