Being neither a sovereign nation nor a state has prevented the island’s residents from enjoying the full rights of American citizenship: Puerto Rican residents are not allowed to vote in federal elections, they have no representation in the Senate, and the delegate in the House of Representatives serves more as a figurehead.
Pepsi’s recent commercial received a lot of negative backlash for its tone-deaf approach to social activism. Starring Kendall Jenner, the commercial appropriated the struggle of minorities for its capitalist motive.
