Baseball
The baseball team took its third straight non-conference win against Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, winning 16-4 in Newburgh, NY. The Violets opened with three runs in the top of the first inning and maintained a lead for the rest of the game.
NYU took a 19-4 victory against The City College of New York two days later. The first inning saw more competition, with the Beavers scoring one run in the top, followed by the Violets’ three runs in the bottom. Following another three runs for both teams, NYU grasped a steady lead by the third inning, which the team held until the end of the contest. Graduate student Kosta Mocklis hit his 22nd career home run, setting a new program record and tying for first in UAA home runs with 11 this season.
The team finished the season on Sunday in Willimantic, CT, with a 3-2 loss against Eastern Connecticut State University. ECSU opened scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning, and the game remained at a 1-0 standstill until the eighth, when NYU tied the score. The eighth and ninth innings saw a close back and forth, until the bottom of the ninth when the Warriors took the game by one run.
The Violets end the season 13-21 overall and 5-15 in the UAA.
Golf
The women’s golf team swept at the Liberty League Championship on Friday, finishing the tournament in first place for an automatic NCAA Championship bid.
The Violets ended the first day of competition in first of seven teams with a score of +3. All five competing Violets finished in the top six out of 32 competitors in individual rankings, with sophomore Naomi Tan and first-year Jiayi Fu leading in first place, tied with even-par rounds. First-year Inha Jun followed in third place with +1, while sophomore Sonia Hao and senior Tiya Chowdary earned fourth and sixth place, respectively.
NYU continued to dominate on the second day sweeping all top five spots in individual rankings. Fu led the team in first with +3, followed by Hao and Jun, who tied for second with +4, while Tan and Chowdary finished in fourth and fifth place.
The women’s golf team will take the green again on May 19 for the NCAA Division III Championship in Palm Desert, CA.
Softball
Wrapping up a turbulent season, the softball team earned its first conference win of the season during a three-game series at the University of Chicago in Illinois on Friday and Saturday.
While Friday’s matchup ended in a 7-3 loss, the Violets got started strong, scoring all three of their runs in the first inning. Junior Nicole Cicchetti and first-year Emma Sung scored unearned points and sophomore Naya Schubel made it home after junior Emily Barbire grounded out to second base. NYU was outmatched in hits 10-4, but none of the Violets struck out in Chicago.
Saturday’s 9-7 victory broke a dry spell in the UAA. After a 1-run deficit in the first inning, the Violets came back with a fire: scoring three runs at the top of the second inning and four across the next two. Four batters — Barbire, Schubel, Sung and junior Alyssa Quary — hit home runs to widen the advantage. Despite an attempt at a comeback in the later innings, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-5, the Maroons couldn’t match up.
In the final game of the year, the Violets fell 11-3. NYU took a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but UChicago held the team stagnant through the rest of the game. The Maroons took the lead back with four runs at the bottom of the second, and scored six more to end it early with a run-rule win in five innings.
The team ends its season 8-31 overall and 1-16 in the UAA.
