For this edition, we asked WSN staff and contributing photographers to share their travels outside of the Third North basement.

Over the break I took a group trip to Ghana, where we toured Cape Coast Castle — a colonial fort that once held people during the transatlantic slave trade. The castle’s windows overlook the Gulf of Guinea: their last sight before being taken to the Americas.

First established over a century ago in what was then the British Gold Coast colony, Makola Market is a sprawling center of trade that spills across several blocks in Accra. Vendors — almost entirely women — sell everything from giant African snails to wigs in a variety of shades. My friends and I practiced the art of haggling, and eventually walked away with a few bargains we had genuinely earned.

At the San Diego Zoo’s open aviary, I found joy in all of the birds flying past me, bringing a variety of bright colors. Coming home and revisiting tourist attractions brought whimsical nostalgia to my week of exploration.

I started my spring break wandering around the beautifully gloomy scenery of Portland, Maine. The fog and freezing temperatures couldn’t stop me from enjoying the rocky beaches and haunted-looking train tracks along the city’s edge. I ended my week in Salem, Virginia, watching Denison University’s women’s basketball team win their first national championship. I’ll never forget the joy that erupted once the final buzzer sounded.

I went home over break, which meant spending time in nature, under the sun and with our dogs. While it’s fun to joke about living in the middle of nowhere, the Natural State still has its merits.
Leo Field, Film & TV Editor

I spent my spring break in Tulsa co-leading an NYU Alternative Breaks trip. My group of more than a dozen students engaged in community service with inspiring partners like Women in Recovery and embraced the city’s vibrant culture. These photos depict bison roaming the tallgrass prairie of the Osage Nation and the Circle Cinema, an independent movie theater.

Over break, I was lucky enough to travel to northern India where a friend and I had a much needed break among the Himalayas. These photos are from Rishikesh — the yoga capital of the world — where the Ganges river reflects India’s rich culture and spirituality.
