Baseball
The baseball team kicked off its four-game series against the University of Chicago on Friday with an 8-1 loss. Senior Harrison Blueweiss scored the Violets’ only run at the top of the first off of sophomore CJ Franchini’s single. The Maroons took the lead by scoring four runs at the bottom of the first, and held onto it through the game with four more runs across the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
On Saturday, the Violets dropped both games in the doubleheader, 8-4 and 13-10. At the top of the sixth in the first game, graduate student Kosta Mocklis and sophomore Aidan Howladar evened NYU out with UChicago. The Maroons answered with five runs across the seventh and eighth innings, and the Violets’ sole run top of the ninth couldn’t catch up.
NYU got off to a slow start in its second game of the day, allowing UChicago to score eleven runs across the fourth and fifth innings. In the seventh inning, the Violets scored nine runs to cut the deficit to just two. UChicago scored two more runs at the bottom of the sixth and seventh, and the Violets capped off the day with a 13-10 loss.
On Sunday, the Violets finished off the series with another 13-10 loss. UChicago started strong, bringing seven runners home at the bottom of the first and snagging another run in the second. NYU started to bounce back after Blueweiss hit a one-run homer, and scored four runs in both the fourth and seventh —the Violets but couldn’t take the lead from UChicago and finished its series swept 0-4 by the conference rival.
The baseball team will take the field again at home on Wednesday against Vassar College.
Golf
The men’s golf team headed to Verona, NY to compete in the Liberty League Championship from Friday to Sunday where they dominated over three days of competition.
Day one landed the team in first out of seven, with four Violets ranked individually in the top ten. Sophomore Oscar Uribe led the Violets with a five-under 67 — the lowest round of the day out of 35 competitors — junior Jomyuth Luangtana-anan followed in second place with a three-under 69, and first-years Qi (Steven) Liu and Tanmay Chandra finished with an even-par 72, tying for eighth.
On Saturday, the Violets maintained their lead, remaining three-under par after the second round. Going into the third and final round, Uribe kept his first-place spot in individual rankings, while Luangtana-anan trailed in sixth with an even par, Chandra sat in 11th with a +3, Liu followed in 12th with a +4, and first-year Goerge Zhou rounded out the Violets in the top 20 with a score of +9.
On Sunday, the Violets finished the Liberty League Championship in second out of seven schools with a score of -1, with the University of Rochester stealing first place in the third and final round. In individual rankings, Uribe led the Violets, leaving the tournament tied in first place with a score of -8. Luangtana-anan followed in fourth, rounding out the top five with an even-par, while Chandra maintained his position in 11th, Liu ranked 16th and Zhou finished in 19th out of 34 competitors.
The men’s golf team will return to the field on May 12 for the NCAA Division III Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.
Softball
On Wednesday, the softball team split a doubleheader against Farmingdale State College.
The Violets broke a 17-game losing streak, defeating the Rams 7-2 in the first match. Junior Emily Barbire opened, scoring in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore pitcher Olyvia Rutter contributed heavily to the win, striking out two batters and not allowing any earned runs over seven innings. The second game of the day finished with NYU’s 5-1 loss — the Rams scored five runs in the first four innings and NYU trailed for the rest of the match.
On Friday, the team hosted Emory University for a Senior Day doubleheader, ending in a 13-0 NYU defeat in game one and a 5-1 loss in game two. To start the day, the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, holding the Violets scoreless for five innings until they secured a run-rule win. The second game was more competitive, but despite a lone run in the second inning, NYU never took the lead after Emory scored two runs in the first inning.
Saturday’s scheduled conclusion to their three-game series against the Eagles was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Violets are set to return to the diamond on May 1 for the final UAA series at UChicago.
Tennis
The women’s team kicked off its campaign at the UAAs on Friday against Carnegie Mellon University as the sixth seed in the tournament. The Tartans swept the Violets 4-0 with NYU not managing to secure wins in either singles or doubles matchplay.
On Saturday, however, NYU won a close 4-3 matchup against Brandeis University in the consolation semifinals. Four singles players — first-years Visnja Gusavac and Sophia Yang and sophomores Victoria Wang and Vera Bondarenko — won their matches to earn NYU the point.
The Violets ended their competition by falling 4-0 against Case Western Reserve University on Sunday. None of the doubles pairs were able to log a win against the Spartans, and in singles play, Wang retired in the second set of her match after falling 6-1 in the first.
The men’s tennis team kicked off its UAA Championship campaign as the seventh seed in the tournament on Thursday against CMU and was swept 4-0 in matchplay by the Tartans.
The Violets got off to a better start on Friday against Brandeis. Both the doubles duo of senior Shido Ito and first-year Jeh-Lei Fan and the pair of junior Louis Frowein and sophomore Boris Slesarev won their matches 6-4 to gain the doubles point. In singles, despite graduate student Niklas von Hellens and Frowein winning their matches, the other four singles players fell to finish the day with a tight 4-3 defeat against Brandeis.
NYU capped off its tournament run on Saturday with a dominant 4-0 performance against the University of Rochester to secure seventh place at the UAA Championship. After winning the doubles point, von Hellens took his singles match 6-3, 6-1. Frowein and first-year Kaustav Guttikonda’s wins added to NYU’s victory.
The men’s and women’s tennis team will both begin their NCAA Division III Championship campaign on May 18 in Chattanooga, TN.
Track & field
The men’s and women’s track & field teams ended the first day of the UAA Outdoor Championships in Cleveland, OH on Saturday in last place out of seven teams with three and 19 points, respectively.
The women’s track & field team started off strong when senior Emma Grunin won the women’s javelin event with a distance of 36.90m, throwing over one meter farther than second place. Junior Olivia Jackson, recording a time of 10:46.17, placed third in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event. Sophomore Gianna Dawson ran a time of 2:14.84 in the 800m preliminaries, earning her personal-best of the season and securing a spot in the finals.
On Sunday, the women’s team finished last out of seven teams with 46 total points.
First-years Amalia Hronides and Alexa McMillian led the Violets in the high jump and triple jump events, respectively. Hronidies rounded off the podium in third place with a 1.62m distance, while McMillian stole second place in triple jump with 11.86m.
The men’s track & field team saw three runners advance past the preliminary rounds to Sunday’s finals.
On the final day of the UAA Championship, the men’s team also finished seventh out of seven teams, ending with just 27 points. First-year Theo Udelson-Nee’s time of 3:54.11 in fourth and junior Liam Hagerty’s 3:54.28 fifth-place finish led the Violets in the men’s 1500m.
The Violets also saw success in men’s discus as senior Daniel Lee recorded a 41.54m throw and took eighth place out of 17 throwers. Men’s triple jump junior Nishad Sankar ranked sixth with 13.81m, followed by senior Drew Boyce in 12th. In men’s javelin, senior Kai Aravena finished in 12th with a distance of 40.53m.
