Adventuring around New York City after dark reveals a side of the city that’s less about the people and more about the buildings, which shine differently once the streetlights turn on.

Over spring break in 2024, some friends and I took an evening ferry out to Ward’s Island, just off the coast of Toronto. The city skyline — which consists of over 100 skyscrapers — is striking, but what stood out to me most was the quiet charm and unhurried nature of the island itself.

I carry my half-frame Kodak point-and-shoot camera everywhere — from New Orleans’ Mardi Gras parade to a bar in Florence. I love taking photos at night because the flash is blinding, and honestly, I’m never sure what the result will be.
Neil Tawney, Photo Editor
