The Las Vegas Aces swept the Phoenix Mercury 4-0 in this season’s WNBA Finals, marking the first best-of-seven four-game sweep in WNBA history and securing the team’s third title in four years. A’ja Wilson was named Finals MVP, league MVP, Co-Defensive Player of the Year and All-WNBA First Team. As late as Aug. 2, the Aces were sitting at .500 overall. After defeating No. 1 seeded Minnesota Lynx 3-1 in the semifinals, the Mercury failed to win a single game as head coach Nate Tibbetts was ejected from Game 4 for arguing with officials.
“A’ja Wilson, being only 29 and already having four league MVPs — the most in WNBA history — and showing no signs of slowing down, all but confirms that she will retire as the WNBA GOAT.”
— John Bush, Deputy Magazine Editor
“The Las Vegas Aces lived up to their name, dealing the Mercury a 4–0 tennis ‘ace’ so clean there wasn’t even a chance for a return.”
— Krish Dev, Digital Director
“I love to see A’ja Wilson win — she ignites a certain kind of patriotism in me. MVP for a reason, if I must say. Beautiful to see my two favorite teams win the championships back-to-back, starting with the New York Liberty’s first WNBA championship last year and now the Las Vegas Aces’ third championship in four years.”
— Julia Kim, Culture Editor
“I’m still mourning the Lynx-Aces finals that we could have seen, but the Aces had the comeback of the year and got a well deserved win.”
— Kiran Komanduri, Deputy Sports Editor
“The sweep will unfortunately cause Mercury guard Kahleah Copper’s fantastic finals to be forgotten. Going from averaging 15.6 points per game in the regular season to scoring 22.75 points per game in the finals against the best team in the WNBA is an incredible accomplishment.”
