Golf
The men’s golf team finished fourth at the Skidmore Invitational in Saratoga Springs, NY on Sunday.
The team shot a combined +20 through the first three rounds and carded a +8. Junior Jomyuth Luangtana-anan finished in ninth place to lead the way for NYU, shooting a -3 and ending the day with 13 birdies. First-year Qi Liu finished second among the Violets, finishing 14th overall with a +2 and registering 12 birdies.
The No. 5-ranked women’s team competed at the Tartan Invitational in Farmington, PA on Tuesday. In first-year Jiayi Fu’s fourth collegiate event, she broke multiple NYU program records by shooting seven-under-par 65 and posting a two-day total of 136, coming in first out of 84. Fu’s performance earned her a spot as one of the UAA’s Athletes of the Week.
First-year Inha Jun finished eighth with a score of -4. Overall, NYU finished second with a score of -11, trailing behind Emory University with a score of -19.
Both the men’s and women’s teams concluded their fall season and will be back in action on March 20 in Jekyll Island, GA for the Jekyll Island Invitational.
Soccer
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the men’s soccer team claimed its second win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Rutgers University-Newark in Newark, NJ.
After a closely contested game, NYU prevailed after goals from graduate student forward Giulio Potenti, sophomore midfielder Joe Broncato and senior midfielder Terra Nagai. Junior Goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey held down the goal, registering a total of four saves on six registered shots.
On Saturday, the Violets fell to the University of Rochester 2-0 at home.
Despite a standout first half from McCloskey, NYU failed to put the ball in the back of the net after conceding early. Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Violets remained aggressive in the second half with a total of ten shots, registering two on goal. However, after NYU conceded an 83rd-minute own-goal, Rochester would see out the 2-0 victory.
Women’s soccer drew 1-1 against The University of Rochester at home on Saturday. After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Marlee Scanlon took the Violet’s first shot of the second half in the 56th minute, putting them up 1-0. Just 10 minutes later, sophomore goalkeeper Mia Capo stopped a penalty, though Rochester scored a late goal in the 85th minute to cement the 1-1 tie.
Both the men’s and women’s team are back in action on Oct. 18, in Atlanta for a UAA match against Emory University.
Swimming and Diving
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were victorious in their season openers on Saturday at NYU’s Palladium Athletic Facility.
The men’s team opened with a 149-94 victory against NCAA Division II West Chester University of Pennsylvania. The Violets won eight of their 11 opening events, led by sophomore trio Teddy McQuaid, Maksym Nechydyuk and Hodge Dauler, who finished first, second and third in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Pierce Downs also claimed an event after winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.97. First-year Adam Mekrami placed second in both the 1,000-yard and 500-yard distance events.
Nechydyuk continued performing, winning the 200-yard individual medley and finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke. NYU also claimed the 200-yard freestyle relay. Senior Makai Harder finished second in the 3m dive and third in the 1m dive, while sophomore Nolan Jennings second in the 1m dive and third in the 3m dive
The women’s team opened with a 184-53 victory against West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Claiming all 11 events, NYU dominated all areas of competition — senior Emily Muller and junior Aanya Wala finished first and second in the 1000-yard freestyle, while senior Nicole Ranile claimed first in the 500-yard and 200-yard freestyles.
Junior Lian Jeong Engle claimed another win for the Violets in the 100-yard freestyle and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle. On the diving boards, senior Meera Kasturi won both the 1m and 3m dives while sophomore Katherine Taylor and senior Isabella Reyes finished second and third in both events, respectively.
The men’s and women’s teams return to action in a diving-only competition at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Go Red Diving Invitational in Troy, NY on Oct. 25.
Volleyball
Women’s volleyball split matches at the UAA Round Robin #2 on Sunday in Cleveland.
In its first game, NYU defeated Brandeis University in straight sets. After falling down 5-4, the Violets would rally to win the first set 25-14 and the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-19, respectively.
Junior hitter Grace Nelson recorded a game-high seven kills while senior setter Ava Launsbach recorded 17 assists en route to the team’s dominant victory.
Later that afternoon, NYU was defeated by Emory University in a four-set battle.
After getting out to a 18-12 lead, Emory would close the first set on a 13-3 run to win 25-22. In a closely contested second set, the Violets would find themselves up 22-21 before Emory would close out the set strong again with a 5-1 run.
NYU stayed strong in the third set, fighting to claim a tight 29-27 victory. However, after finding themselves up 25-24, the Violets couldn’t force a deciding set with Emory winning the fourth set 27-25.
Nelson once again led NYU with 13 kills while Lemons and Hynes recorded 12 and 10 kills each. Launsbach finished with 29 assists while first-year hitter Sarah Beville put up four aces.
NYU returns home on Oct. 17 to play Hunter College at the Paulson Center.
