Layana Aguilar S/S 2017

Touches of turquoise, whites and blacks are coloring the Spring/Summer 2017 collection of Layana Aguilar. A Brazilian native and resident of New York, Layana was a Project Runway season 11 finalist and established her eponymous brand in 2013. Her brand is known for its femininity and comfort without sacrificing sophistication.

The Spring/Summer 2016 presentation took place at the Highline Loft in an intimate space. For this collection, Layana continued to play with texture and textiles seen throughout her past seasons. Many of the garments had splashes of graphics in conjunction with a mix of fabrics; neoprene being a definite favorite for this collection. Bold shapes cast over the models with billowing sleeves and flouncy skirts having part in several of the looks. As Layana pushes for her customer to embody confidence while wearing her garments, some of the clothes even read “#Girlboss”.

While the dramatic shapes were a standout of the collection, much was left to be desired. Even though Layana’s customer might definitely be a #Girlboss, one might say a more subdued approach might have been stronger and appealed to a larger demographic. While turquoise was a refreshing pop of color for the palette, the collection seemed claustrophobic when taking into consideration the use of the prints, graphics and mixtures of fabric.

Overall, Layana’s fun personality was evidently seen throughout the collection.
