Dream-pop indie band Beach House released two albums in one year, following their early-2015 “Depression Cherry” with “Thank Your Lucky Stars.” Compared to “Depression Cherry,” the sounds in this more recent album are grainier with the synth presses harder and each song feeling full with different levels of effect. Beach House, whose only real criticism is their monotonousity, elevates themselves up past that criticism.

There are the same levels of whimsical qualities that were present in the albums “Depression Cherry,” “Bloom” and “Teen Dream,” but “Thank Your Lucky Stars” isn’t as light. The third track, “All Your Yeahs,” is a perfect embodiment of the rougher sound. It is classic Beach House, but it takes more haunting tones with lead singer Victoria Legrand ominously singing, “Lay your dead flowers / All in a row / Sooner or later / We’re gonna let them go,” over deeper beats that would be found in previous projects.

While instruments like electric guitar and drums are present in previous works, they take a more dominant role in the album. “One Time” turns Beach House’s normally mellow and harmonious calm into a more vibrating and throbbing calm. “All Your Yeahs” and “One Time” are not songs one could fall asleep to, but could definitely accompany a road trip.

“The Traveller” sounds like it could be placed on any album and not stand out. Among an otherwise remarkable album, it is a great song that doesn’t distinguish itself as anything but trademark Beach House. “Elegy to the Void,” stays completely on theme with the overarching themes of grittier, tougher dream pop. To contrast these coarser songs, “Rough Song” is perhaps the calmest song on the album, but still differentiates itself from previous work.

Overall, the album is a progression and deviation from previous albums, yet still possesses a familiarity that won’t leave fans feeling alienated. “Thank Your Lucky Stars” is another solid, calm album from an indie rock duo that dominates the dream pop genre.

“Thank Your Lucky Stars” was released on Oct. 16.
